How do you find out engine details

I have watched live trains on YouTube and some folk are able to get the train engine number or even name before it arrives. I often wonder how they are getting this information.
If for example The Flying Scotsman was pulling a train, how would you find this out .. from a normal website rather than through a specific Flying Scotsman fan page.

Try this website for all Steam: https://www.railadvent.co.uk/steam-locomotives-on-the-mainline. You can also look for Facebook/whatsapp groups and the like but I don't know how they handle requests to join etc.

This sounds like you are interested in railtours, in which case my first port of call would be railtourinfo. Most railtour details are included, and where known requested or allocated locos are shown.

Also Real Time Trains has numbers for a lot, but not all, Train Operating Companies

Rail Record (https://live.rail-record.co.uk/) will often show loco information that people have contributed if they spot it earlier on the journey, or have knowledge of what the train will consist of before it departs.
