Hello all how do you deal with email scams? Well if they ask you for money just copy and paste this below and they wont think were as stupid as we look! by the way this is how i deal with them! :D:);):p

Dear Mr Johnson,

Many thanks for the email and asking me to help by providing a bank account to receive a share of the $42m from the floating account of the deceased that nobody else knows about.

I see that you are the Director of International Relations at the bank that you work for in Madrid, imagine my surprise when you say that you 'don't know any foreigner in my life'. How do you do an international relations job and never know any foreigners? That must be a great job with little to do, oh I wish I had one like it.

I would really like to have helped however, upon a recent visit to the toilet, imagine my surprise when £10m (UK sterling) fell out of my arse. I am unsure on the tax implications of having come into (rather painfully) such a large amount of money.

I would therefore like to be able to move it out of the country, ideally to Madrid. Hang on, you work in Madrid in a bank don't you? Please would you send me your personal bank details and I will tranfer the money as soon as possible. I will require only £1,000 fee up front. You see as the money came out of my arse it is a bit dirty and therefore needs laundering.

I look forward to a prompt reply

Regards
Lord Marmaduke Dangleberry-Flangebottom III

I just file them under T for Trash. Replying using your own email account only validates your email address and can usually lead to more spam being received.

It's a similar situation if you click on a fake link in some of the supposed emails from the banks that actually take you to a fake website that can also install spyware when you visit as well as nick your details if you are stupid enough to type them in.

Unfortunately there are vulnerable people or stupid people that actually fall for these scams and loose serious money to them.

Good Lord, I went to school with your father, Lord Marmaduke Dangleberry-Flangebottom II. How is the old fella??

Seriously though, I came across an email exchange between one of these chancers and someone in the UK a while back and it was almost comical to see how far these guys will go to to get someone to take the bait. In the end this guy just admitted it was a scam and that he had mixed success in his endeavours but as mentioned above it only takes one buffoon to pay up and the scam pays for itself.

I still keep getting them though and still keep binning them too.

Twice I have contacted banks (different ones) about e-mails that I have received, not the usual Nigerian ones though, these looked pretty convincing.
Both were sent to the bank's dedicated fraud dept address.

The first one turned out to be genuine, from a company doing survey work for the bank, and had included the bank's name in their own, making the address look very dodgy. It took the bank 5 days to respond to my e-mail.
The second time I forwarded the e-mail in question to the bank (as directed on their website) - their server bounced it back - said it was Spam !

I just delete them all now, if the banks can't be bothered - why should I ?

I quite like them, actually. If people are thick enough to fall for them, they thoroughly deserve to lose their money!

What I do is setup a false email address such as Boing_Boing@yahoo.com if I'm visiting a site for information that requires a log in.

That way any further mails either go into the ether, bounce back to them or any senders or sit in the email account until it's full then bounces.

Prevention is better than cure, to be honest.

I'm very careful with my e-mail addresses and receive almost no spam whatsoever. I use Hotmail accounts wherever necessary and will close down one account and move onto another whenever one gets compromised. So far this has only happened twice, and on one of those ocassions it was down to a slip in my own judgement.

If it isn't from someone I know, and it sounds like a scam then I click the 'mark as a scam' button.

Doesn't help to reply to them either, just proves that your email account is active.

That's true but reading one of the email exchanges on the 419eater website I actually would quite like a wooden carving of my own head. I wonder if the African fella at deaths door is still doing them? Made me laugh big time that one did.
