How do request stops work?

There is no such thing as a request stop on certain trains, its either a request stop for all or none.

Well, for starters, Bucknell is a request stop for some trains and not for others. But that's because of the level crossing.

Interesting that Northern added new ones in Lancashire, when in Cheshire they removed some request stop status' with the citied reason in the case of Ashley was that it isn't easy for the driver to see a passenger waiting to board between sunset and sunrise times.

I think the shocking timekeeping on the East Lancs may have swung the decision to make Pleasington, Hapton, Huncoat and Burnley Barracks request stops. It can make up more time if it doesn't have to stop at so many stations.

On The Cambrian Morfa Mawddach is a request stop for all services apart from one up and one down service on a sunday that are booked to call.

I know Piling is served by one train in each direction on a saturday but does it stop on request only?

Not supposed to be, tried to get on the only train once, and the 158 sailed past at some speed (well over 25mph, I'd say around 40), I think the driver wasn't expecting us to get on, and powered away towards the tunnel, probably pretending it was another service or something.

Got on the line to FGW at least, and they provided a taxi, so needless to say I suspect the driver was reminded to slow down or just stop next time in case!

Just to point out why Bucknell isn't a request stop on the way to Shrewsbury - the train has to stop at the station as just after is a level crossing. On the way to Swansea the train stops the other side of the level crossing and the station is then a request stop. (And there's no excuse then of not being able to stop it!)

A few other examples on HOWL. Ammanford, Llandybie, Llangadog, Llanwrda, Dolau......trains all have mandatory stop going north. Ffairfach is mandatory going south.

Alighted there a few times going north, had pint at either the Railway tavern or the Baron of Beef then walked back to Knighton to catch southbound train. Unless I'm mistaken it's also the location of a crazy accident involving a Del Boy Reliant 3 wheeler and 153 a few years ago.

I use the East Lancs line and since they brought in the request stops i have always been on a train that has had to stop at the request stops.

Couple of new ones are in Lancashire, including Burnley Barracks, Hapton, Huncoat and Pleasington.

Most services that go through request stops will either sound the horn (in case someone is waiting in a shelter) or go through slowly, so even if someone does make the 'emergency stop' signal, the train should be going slow enough anyway to not cause a problem.

I'm glad you've mentioned this, because I've been at Preston and noticed that there's no mention of those stations being request stops during a platform announcement. The PID doesn't mention it either.

The guards announce such on trains however, which has happened every time I've used the East Lancs since the requests were introduced.

Was in Bucknell recently and they've got CCTV cameras at the level crossing now AND (to my surprise) all the stations on the HOWL have digital information screens! The 21st century reaches the HOWL's halts!!

. Its a bit complex, I travel twice a week on that line and Dilton Marsh is a request yes, but so are the other two on certain trains. Yet other trains stop, the other skip both stations. Its a bit hit and miss to be honest.

Freshford and Avoncliff are no longer request stops, they are normal stops for the trains that are booked to stop at these stations, the ones that don't stop are the Portsmouth - Cardiff trains which run non stop between Bradford on Avon and Bath Spa.

Also the SO 08xx or 09xx (forget the time) Bristol to Weymouth and 1655 return doesn't call at both.

The only other semi-slow one is the 1655 Filton to Westbury which calls at Freshford but not Avoncliff.
