How do drivers 'spend a penny'?

What does a driver do if he (or she!) needs the loo? Especially if they get 'caught short' with the 'trots'? Unsceduled stop at the next station? Stop where they are and run back into the train to use the loo?

There must, presumambly, be procedures to cover this human need. How does it work?

With passenger trains its not too bad if you can hold on until the next stop where hopefully you can get to the toilet and back while passengers get on and off, if you cant then you'll have to run with a slight delay.

If you've got to stop, you've got to stop. However, it's not unheard of for a driver to lose control and soil themselves.

I've yet to resort to in-cab relief. I'm just very disciplined about how much I drink before and during a job and making sure I go to the loo before setting off even if I don't feel it's needed yet. There's nothing worse than setting up a Cambridge train and feeling OK only to get a really urgent need to pee just as as I'm passing through Hackney Downs.

I guess Theres no way a driver can stop the train for using a toilet,they probaly just go In a bottle,or just soil In a bag and chuck It.

I can just Imagine a train announcement that says for e.g "The SouthEastern service to London Charing X is delayed due to a soiling problem at orpington sorry for any Inconvinionce caused by this"!

Well, I was working a HST on a Saturday afternoon last year and we came to a stand unexpectedly. Popped me head out of the TGS window to see a green signal and the driver relieving himself out of the cab doorway down onto the cess!!! Couldn't believe it!!!!

Just hope that you are not doing a run like London - York, London - Preston or Newcastle - Edinburgh non-stop! At least on planes then 2nd officer (or even autopilot) can take control!

With me,York is a make yourself go to the toilet stop when heading south,same at kx heading north,just gotta go and drain them spuds !!!!!

I remember when I first went to crewe I saw the driver come flying out of the bog as we all got off, he must of put the brakes on and just gone for it

cant say for certain but having seen the cab of a 66 its a funny layout where as most locos have the door to the cab leading to the door to the eng room these have a door then a little walkway and the cab is to one side, on reflection there could be room for a loo but im not 100% on it at all, tell you what next time i meet a 66 driver ill make it the main topic

He said that bus drivers were generally envious of London Underground drivers who had pretty decent lavatories available to them at certain stations. Bus drivers have no official or private toilet provision anywhere away from their depots; he said that William Hill bookmakers are usually the most welcome places...

To be honest, I'd been given the full impression that most cabs were fitted with "comfort pipes" to direct fluids into the cess and keep the cab clean. In the case of female drivers using such facilities, I'd imagine that they'd either carry adaptors around with them or they may be stored in the cabs themselves.
As for 2X-- coded jobs though, my advice would be to try and go before starting the shift!

Though I'm no train driver I have to confess that I have found myself in a similar situation to them on one occasion. I was on board the last service of the night from Woking to Waterloo which - Much to my inconvenience (Pun not intended) - Was being run non-stop via the Richmond loop and formed of 2x455s.
Although I tried my very best to avoid having to do so, I was eventually forced to resort to fishing an Evian bottle out of the dustbin, make rather abnormal use of the coupling vestibule, then lob the sealed bottle out of the window into the LuL cess.
Thankfully I was one of only two passengers on board that whole unit, and with the other passenger being a Chav I knew full well that he wouldn't be bothered!
