How common is this? No facilities whatsoever.

Electronic displays don't feature anywhere on the Blackpool line other than at the terminus - a relatively busy station like Poulton-le-Fylde has no displays at platform level and I don't think it has any in the booking office. It's also rare for there to be an announcement unless a train's cancelled or very late.

Layton has (I think) a help point and that's it.

Then there's Kirkham and Wesham which lost its roof many years ago, you'll often see passengers waiting on the covered stairs up to the booking office.

None of these are 'grim', they're all reasonably well looked after and well used (especially Poulton) so absence of real time information seems all the more bizarre.

Okay, bonus question:
What's the least facilities of any station in the old NSE area?

OTTOMH, Dean is pretty sparse, just a couple of shelters, benches and bike racks, with no displays (only help points).

Edit: neighbouring Dunbridge is even less: it doesn't even have help points, and the shelter is a flimsy bus-stop-style one as opposed to the proper wooden canopy at Dean.

There wasn't a lot at Doleham last time I looked. A shelter, a sign and a timetable.

According to NRE there's a payphone too, but it doesn't really count because it's on the road not the platform. :p

Yeah, doesn't count if it's not on Railway Property. By that token, Berney Arms could be said to have a station bar

Combe (Oxfordshire) surely must be among the contenders for "most spartan ex-NSE" stations.

One short platform, a bench, and a basic help point. Oh, and cycle racks .http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/SME/html/NRE_CME/plan.html

(Hmm: I think it counts as ex-NSE. At any rate it is in the Network Railcard area, although I'm not sure the North Cotswolds line was when it was first established). The other one-day-a-train halts on the same line are very slightly less basic.

Anybody mentioned Haddiscoe ?? used to be alive when I was a kid but went there recently for a nose around and really looks a bit bleak even with the "bus" shelters and plus it's right on the marsh lol. Saying that i suppose you could always knock on someones door nearby and anooy them till the train comes lol,

Between the parallel lines
Bordesley has some lampposts, a nasty-looking shelter and some stairs. And that appears to be about it!

Peartree has station lighting, a couple of benches, a help point and sundry notice boards.

It does have a bus stop outside though. Which being on one of the main radial roads from Birmingham city centre must give it the most disproportionate ratio of bus to train services of any open rail station.

To be honesy the overwhelming majority of UK stations are basic.....but why would they be anything else? If a station is served by say 1 tph an hour and the average UK PPM is 93%, then clearly passengers have a greater trust in the service reliability and can tailor their travel plans with a high degree of confidence. Even in the abscence of PIS, there is usually a poster timetable, and most people nowadays have mobiles with apps which can be used to monitor service running times etc.

My own station ( Fairfield ) is probably about as basic as anything else on the UK network, but I can get on a train with monotonous regularity.....I m certainly not one for wanting to hang about on a platform. Interestingly the one next up the line from me ( Guide Bridge ) is actually having a new manned ticket office built on the Manchester bound platform....which kind of flies in the face of office closures and de manning smaller stations!!

Or suggests that de-staffing has gone, in some cases, too far.

Exeter has a few stations like that. Polsloe Bridge, St James Park, St Thomas....

Polsloe doesnt even have a single seat, and the info point doesn't work.

Goxhill Station
Unstaffed
No ticket office
No ticket machines
No toilets
No help points
No display boards
No announcements
No boardings ramps
The station is in daily use with a infrequent but all day Northern Rail service

Back when Cardiff Bay was called Cardiff Bute Road it had all the lack of facilities you describe plus no shelter,no lights (or lamposts),no signs and no timetable boards.Just a bare platform, nothing else.

I still think Berney Arms takes some beating, Although it does have a shelter of some sort. I believe erected by the friends of Berney Arms Stn and a cycle rack. It DOESN'T have road access. I have just noticed it has a help point. So not as bad as originally thought but still pretty grim. Wouldn't fancy being stuck there when the pub is shut.

The road access issue is, after surviving the odd closure proposal over the last 50 years or so, apparently why it's still there.

Surely Reddish South is the winner, no lights, no benches, no shelter, just poles with station name boards on - thats what I'd call no facilities whatsoever!

And no trains (except for 10:20 on a Friday)
