Just thought I'd ask everyone, how close is your house approximately to your nearest main line?
Myself, I'm quite lucky, I live about 15ft away from one. The only time it's annoying is when Network Rail are doing all night posessions

Live in the centre of Newcastle. From laptop to Central in approximately 120 seconds on a good day.

Cant see or hear the lines unfortunately and there are not many good vantage points unless you are on station, although I do enjoy shooting off Redheugh Bridge.

So not often then, except DRS RHTT times.

I'm about 1/4 mile(22 chains) from the WCML branch & about 3 miles from the GWR's mainline to chester. I can hear vulgars clunking from here & some yinging. Sometimes if I'm lucky some EE thrash & Sulzer throb. Can always hear two tones though. If I'm sleeping it's just like being a signalman again! Wake up in a panic & attempt to set a route, then realise I'm a driver now & actually in bed legit. (probably only a signalman would understand the feeling).

I`m a bit off the beaten track really, we`ve never had a railway in the village although the lanchasire and Yorkshire railway did once get planning approval for a branch which they never built. My nearest station was Middleton Lancs (as it was originally called), circa 2 mile away, but Beeching closed this one in the 60s, Heywood would probably be the next one at say 3 mile away, again this was also closed by Beeching but fortunately the East Lancs railway now own it. After that i`m about another 3 or 4 mile between Bowker vale which was closed as a railway station when the Metrolink was introduced and on the other side Mills Hill on the Calder valley line, the main line between Manchester and Bradford yorks.
