Have you tried the Southern website?

They often have "Web Off Peak Return" tickets available during promotions. I've not checked to see if a promotion is currently running or not...

I've tried Southern and it wont let me. I've also tried 'take the train'. On the Southern website it is just greyed out.

It is a Day Return. I just realised that the ticket type does not have the word "Day" in it but it is only a Day Return reading the detailed information on validity.

I think the confusion is that pinguini has set the origin on brfares.com as Marylebone, and the site than makes the same mistake that TVMs make in recommending a standard London Terminals to destination ticket when in fact one from a U-zone is required. Is it possible to purchase U-zone tickets from any ticket retailing websites?

Yes, WebTIS and Trainline sites support this. Just start typing "Zone U" and they should autocomplete.

I have purchased one of those before from Virgin Trains website to get from Coventry to London Liverpool Street. I cant seem to get anywhere to work with a 'U zone' ticket for Gatwick to Marylebone

Assuming that the OP is using WebTIS, if searching from Marylebone, the fare should not be shown at all, rather than greyed out. WebTIS would show the correct U-zone fare. (In this case U1256.)

Haven't tried other engines.

Looks like only Anytime Returns available if you need to go into Victoria. An Off-Peak Return to/from Kentish Town is slightly cheaper than the Anytime Return to/from London Terminals, including a cross-London transfer in each direction. Other options also available.
