Quite right - how would I deter people from sitting next to me when trying to bag a double seat to myself. There is nothing better than a good Curry or Fish and Chips with a couple of cans of Cider to deter someone from sitting next to you when trying for the all important double seat on a Pendolino coming home on a Friday Night/Afternoon after a hard week working away

If people couldn't take / eat food on trains, they would have to think of something else to leave strewn round the carriage for other people to clean up!

Mind you there is always the Metro! I just used to 'love' walking round the station having to pick up pristine, unfolded, unread Metro's that people had picked up from the Metro stand, held for 5 mins, then just dumped it down when their train arrived!! But I digress

I can understand this being implemented on Metro/Suburban comutter trains but eating food on a Regional or InterCity service I don't see a problem with personally

For those who took my suggestion seriously and told me to "get over it", I did say it was tic (that's tongue-in-cheek, for the uninitiated). Also nowhere did I suggest that entire trains be non-eating, just that it could be considered to have one coach that was designated as such.

I bet dieters would make a bee-line for it.

Oh yes. I used to think how annoying it was that people ate fast food on all the trains out of Kings Cross every evening. Then I did it once myself and realised that it's not actually too bad... perhaps on trains with quiet coaches they could become no eating as well, but a blanket ban would be too far!

Easy, the bloody train would run late, if you think I am going to drive a 455 for 5 hrs and 45 mins without having anything to eat you can <ooh err Betty> off!

McDonalds Pancakes are cooked in microwaves, but for sausages you need a full size grill

It's only food, really. People have taken food onto the train with them since the dawn of railways - it isn't like a noisy mobile phone conversation which could stop people sleeping, or disturb them from work. And while on-train catering's on the pricey side, it makes more sense to just grab something from McDonalds or Subway or wherever before you get on board.

The Swiss tried some McDonalds catering cars in their livery. Delighted to say they were a commercial disaster and dissapeared PDQ.

According to notices, it would appear that in addition to smoking and alcohol, as Greenback mentioned way back, food is actually banned entirely from Manchester Metrolink! I have always thought this totally over the top. Especially if it also covers platforms (as I think it does!).

What we are actually banned from consuming is:

any food which will soil disfigure or destroy the property of
any other Person on the System or any Vehicle or any

If you wish to discourage your fellow travellers from sitting next to you I've found that nothing works better than a railway atlas and a stopwatch. For 100% deterrence add a thermos flask and an anorak.

I have no problem at all with people eating whatever they like on trains, one of the beauties of the older stock still knocking about is that you can open windows if the smell is overpowering. I certainly wouldn't want it to turn into the situation we have on buses and some light rail networks ATM where you can't eat anything at all or drink certain drinks.

I had a go in the swiss Mcdonalds coach. I wanted chicken nuggets and they had to lift the pantograph to get enough power to cook em...

Its not the food on the train that miffs me, its the fact that its bought, half eaten then left behind. Wasabi noddles at Victoria half eaten can stink out a coach all the way to Worthing while the owner got off at East Croydon.

Sometimes one wonders if it would be preferable to eat the better parts of the horse as opposed to the hoovered off MRM that can be called beef.
Never come across butchers extolling the virtues of spleen of beef or cows lips but mash mash mash and in to the burger mix and all is fine.

You don't have to worry about that with McDonalds, they only use whole cuts of British & Irish beef. No nasty bits of the cows get into their burgers!
