I may have a few days in Houston next month and would like to engineer a couple of journeys by train whilst there.
However, from what I can see, there is only one passenger train each way through Houston (the Sunset Limited) plus the metro (which appears to use trams - not really my thing).
Do any of the USA experts know if Houston offers anything else railwise?

The Sunset Limited is the only one, and what is worse it only runs 3 times a week so it would be difficult to fit in a round trip if you only have a few days.
Too bad you aren't going to Dallas/Fort Worth as there are more options near there such as Trinity Rail Express and the Texas State Railroad in Palestine.

Many thanks. I wonder if the missus had worked it out before me.

A quick look at the European Rail Timetable suggests that it is not possible to do an out and back trip in daylight. On some days it would be possible to go to New Orleans and come back the following day (arr. 21.40/dep. 09.00). (All times to be checked for certainty.)

A lot of Amtrak long distance trains are currently fully booked days, weeks, or even months ahead, so that "walk-up" travel isn't possible. This is partly normal summer demand, and partly a shortage of Superliners (double decker long distance coaches) as a result of maintenance and overhaul backlogs at Beech Grove works, combined with having lost an entire consist that was wrecked in a collision with a dump truck in Missouri a few months ago.
