I once stayed in a hotel in Bournemouth. The room I was given was 12, which had a Mexican theme, with a giant vulture painted on the wall, in front of a typical Mexican wilderness background. I'll see if I can remember the name. It was on a street corner, I can tell you that much.

Every street corner in Bournemouth is a hotel. And then some.

Obviously, having lived 19 miles from Bournemouth, I've never had the need to stay at a hotel there, so no recommendations. However, you must eat at Coriander, the Mexican restaurant on Richmond Hill. Complimentary sombreros are available: need I say more?

I looked on laterooms.com for Tuesday 23rd as an example. You have Lynden Court for £22.50 or Bourne Beat for £30, both single rooms. I have stayed in both so can say that they're fine.

In fact I only stayed at Bourne Beat in February this year when I went for an evening football match and my mate who I normally stay with was on holiday. The hotel has a large collection of music memorabilia (hence the name) in the lobby and throughout. I actually got a sea view room (Room 17), just.

Bourne Beat is very close to the beach, and Lynden Court is slightly further up, however beware that there is a very steep hill going up West Cliff.

Over there
I once stayed in The Laguna, which is close to the roundabout on the A35 and must be almost adjacent to the site of Bournemouth West railway station.

It was not too expensive and had its own swimming pool in an annexe which was great. Mind you, when I was there the meals could be a bit traditional.

I have also stayed in the Durley Dean, but that is rather expensive. I got a cheap few days because I went there out of season.

Also the Fircroft, but I am not sure if that is still open.

Laterooms.com usually give you a grid with the next few days and their availabilty for a long list of hotels, plus prices for each day. It is marvellous.

Edited to say I have just found the Durley Dean on Laterooms and for the next few days it is only £50 a night which is a bargain.

You most certainly have found a bargain at that price in mid-August at The Durley Dean Hotel on West Cliff Road, which is an excellant hotel to stay in. The normal price in August there is quite expensive for all the types of accomodation available. The refurbishments carried out a few years ago did make a difference to this hotel.

try tripadviser.co.uk - i find that a good site to work out which hotel to stay in

I use Hotels Combined, which lists the cheapest price for a lot of hotels, and then check out the ones I like on trip advisor. It hasn't failed me yet! The man at seat 61 recommended Hotels Combined - I don't know if he still does

Trivago is another site that is very similar to Hotels Combined.
