theres a cheaper fish they use now, I know its mostly found in asia and is one of the top eaten fishes in the world but cant remember the name. Its a member of the cat fish family I believe.

Basa is what I was thinking often sold as river cobbler in Europe.

UK Trading Standards officers have stated cobbler is being fraudulently sold as cod by some fish and chip retailers to capitalise on the large difference in the wholesale price between the two, i.e., cobbler costs less than half the price of cod. This practice was highlighted by the successful prosecution of two retailers (using DNA evidence) one in July 2009, and another in April 2010

Not sure why you've got a case, unless you need to carry an awful lot of cod or haddock... It all sounds fishy to me.

Back in summer '04, on Ithaca (tiny Greek island), we saw on the menu "Goat. In paper". Ordering it, we laughed how the quasi-English menu probably meant goat's cheese in a filo pastry.

On arrival, we found out. A gristly joint of goat. Wrapped in a local newspaper. Oh boy...

I'm not at all. I've had horse a few times in France and it was always absolutely lovely, it's a shame that it's not more common over here!

I quite agree, I had a really nice horse steak in Geneva once, as good as the best beef steak I've ever had.

Not connected to the "Bearded Plaice" we used to get in school. It was either the world's smallest Plaice, all tough and tasted rather ripe, or they were passing off Dab instead. Mind you, they fed us for £2 a day for three meals...

Having previous worked for said company, I can only vouch they know where every burger came from, all of their beef was british and they used to take selected employees to visit all their suppliers

Many a true word is spoken in jest. I would be interested to know if there have been any reports of fish from non-British processing plants, purporting to be the better known products such as cod, which have been substituting far cheaper fish cost-wise. Do companies such as Findus carry out stringent checks on the actual type of fish that are supplied to them from overseas suppliers. The most worrying thing is that the "basic" products such as "Cod fish-fingers" with a large percentage of batter in comparison to the amount of fish, could help to disguise the taste of inferior fish products when cooked and these type of foods are regularly featured in meals by those families with limited financial means.

Several fish restaurants have been fined by trading standards for using cheaper alternatives and badging it as expensive variants.

"A national supermarket chain have just announced that their best-selling brand of tinned lager has been found to contain 90% horse urine"....

a local chippy to me sells Panga as well as Cod & Haddock, it's a bit cheaper despite being from the South Africa area, tastes nice but slightly different, though that's possibly the pork it's inevitably been mixed with (as has everything these days, it's like a Monty Python sketch: Pork and Spam?)

Anyway according to metro Friday that Westminster council school lunches were a victim of Pork in Halal Chicken Sausages.

Also Aldi has been found to have horse meat in some of their stuff according to the same newspaper

A report on the 1700 news on Radio 4 today has just reported that a consignment of horse meat from Hungary (approx. 200lbs in weight) that was all labelled as beef has been found at a market trader's stall in Preston and a shop in Liverpool.
