Just a quick heads up to those of you following Hornbys releases - The 2012 Range which is normaly announced at midnight on Christmas Day has been moved to January the 3rd...Although you can find out slightly earlier if your a Model Rail & Rail Express subscriber :)

Few things gradually dripping out into the mainstream via the Hornby Forum, but as im a Model Rail subscriber..well i won't ruin the embargo... Though if your happy with fairly older models, then the range will be alright for you!

Hopefully they may annouce the much needed upgraded and remodeled Class 67. But also a Class 90 or 91 with matching Mk4 Dvt to model high quality standards would be ace.

I'm also a model rail subscriber (Don't know how, but I am and like it!) so know them. Great year for LNER and GWR Fans, also just steam fans in general!

Model Rail subscriber here too. Must say I'm not a steam fan so not a lot of new stuff to get my juices flowing.

Not a model rail subscriber, but looking forward to seeing what they have in store for 2012, I plan to get back into model railways next year so it'll be nice to see

I'd love Hornby to do a class 375 or 377. Tho I'm guessing we may have to wait to see how Bachmann's 350 units do.

I am still longing for them to do an Anglia Railways Class 153, and for Bachmann to do the same with the Cl150...

Midland Mainline Teal and Turquoise HST and coaches

Thats what I'm holding out for. Realy hoping they make one at some point.

They havn't had one in the range since something like 2000. And that livery on Hornby's new HSTs will be stunning!

Well atleast they have the correct headlight clusters for the first MML livery (unlike on the EMT model!)

Indeed, Bachmann have stated that there is an issue with the printing of the change from light blue to dark blue. Bachmann could produce the 166 and Hornby/Dapol the HST, because both only have dark blue on the side. If the printing was possible (and/or cheap enough) it seems likely a 150, 153, 158 or 170 would have appeared by now.

Yup its the same reason there isnt a TPE 170.

To be fair, The 166s are also grade shaded too - Dark to Light blue which i think, has very minutely been covered on the model. As for the livery being too complicated to produce, im rather intrigued by this for several reasons - Firstly, Hornby has produced both the Northern 156 & Wessex Trains Devon & Cornwall Black 153 which the pictorial scenes on either side, As well as the various fady areas (albeit rather small i know) on the FGW Green / Gold & Barbie Liveries (The areas where the band fades into First :::::IIIIIIIIII::::::Great Western), And thanks to the wonderful word of Ebay, i recently managed to pick up one of the far and few FGW Promotional Mk3s produced for the 2006 franchise launch where, although it was a transfer effort, the blue fady areas do seem produceable -So it is a case of Can't or Wont without having a go and producing some prototypes first?

We Shall See...As for Hornby's 2012 range, all i am going to say is that i hope what Model Rail has printed isnt the full story...either way, i'll be looking more foward to seeing what Bachmann will be producing insted anyway!

As for the 67 - I have to admit, from both the pictures in Model Rail & the price slip released on Hattons website last year, i do wonder as to wether it's going to be a totally new model, or a re hashed ex Lima 67 (Looking at the area around the doors, im starting to suspect the latter!)...
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Although to be fair, one change i was looking foward to with Hornby, was a change of packaging - Lone behold, the new B1 turns up in the shops, now contained in a Hornby-ised Bachmann type packaging - So Finally, Goodbye & Good Riddence to most of the awfull 2 piece, 2 rings & a plastic face Hornby complicates everything packaging!

Okay, having looked at some pictures you are right there is some change on the real thing, but the model doesn't have it as far as I can see.

Painting small areas is probably easier than large areas.

I think the green and gold HST models had varying thickness of green and 'off-white' lines. The only pictures of the Hornby 'Barbie' livery HST I can find on google atm is of R2500, which (aside from having the wrong colour for the pink stripe on the power cars) only has fading in small areas of the gold stripe.

I rather suspect it is Bachmann not wanting to do it because they believe it to be too complex rather than it actually being to complex, but then if the paint factory isn't set up for this sort of paintwork (but for blocks of colour), that might explain it a bit.

It seems to me that Hornby are, and always have giving priority to steam era trains and give a lower priority to modern image trains. Although I may be wrong, as I have no interest in steam locomotives. I have been dying for some more variety in the DMU/DEMU/EMU range from both Hornby and Bachmann. A review of the unbranded Class 350 from Bachmann seems very promising. Hornby did a great job with the Class 153's but I don't think enough liveries were produced, or at least they went out of production quite quickly! Unfortunately, according to an employee at Modelzone I spoke to a few weeks ago, both Hornby and Bachmann are facing major delays :(.
The latest issue of Model Rail shows that a Wrexham and Shropshire Class 67 is to be released next year, and the 'Flying Scotsman' East Coast 225 set, which is great!
I'd like to see the newly liveried East Coast HST and IC225 sets, an EMT 156, and certainly EMU's such as 444, 450, 375, 377's etc. 2012 should be the year for modern image modellers!! :D.

Well, here it is! 2012 Doesn’t appear to be a very exciting for anyone expecting many new Diesel & Electric models, just one new tooling in the form of last years postponed Class 67 which will come in 3 new liveries (EWS, DB Red & Wrexham). Other than that, there’s no new EMUs - Just the as ever incorrect 4VEP in BR Blue Grey (With still no corrections), No new coaches, just several more batches of Mk2s in BR Blue Grey & Intercity and Ex Virgin Loco Hauled mk3s (Unfortunately complete with TGS - Still a rather bizzare choice considering the few ex Virgin Mk3s on the network at the moment compared to Ex Virgin Mk2s), No new wagons - just new boxes for the KFAs (And stab on C-Rail Intermodal / Realtrack Models patch with the MAERSK, Hapag Lloyd & Evergreen Container boxes & tankers...Except, C-Rail / Realtrack actually know how to make a correct looking box!) - And why not just release some unboxed / no container KFA Flats?...

Also, Despite the excellent work by Realtrack Models - Who's Excellent Class 144 should be due next year for £100, 2012 Sees the return of the now and still elderly ( first released in 1987) Hornby Class 142 in Northern Rail Livery, which unfortunately going on the basis of the release of the FGW Class 142, don’t expect the price to be any lower than 80 odd!

So really, the rest is re-liveries of current tooled models such as the 60, 73, 86 & 90 - although the ex Lima Class 47 does make a welcome return in Northern Belle livery, complete with new motor and DCC ready.

Anyway, Make of it what as you want to - As per last year, there's the usual lot of heavy releases for the LNER / Eastern Region, few for the Southern including Maunsell Push-Pull coaches, a new range of GWR 'Kettles' in the form of a 42XX, 52XX & 72XX, but very few this time round for the London Midland region, and a rather reduced Skaledale range for 2012 - Mostly taking form of more shops, although North Eastern Region models will certainly be pleased with a dedicated range of buildings based on those on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, and a rather smart looking 1930s Townhouse!

....No new coaches, just several more batches of Mk2s in BR Blue Grey & Intercity and Ex Virgin Loco Hauled mk3s (Unfortunately complete with TGS - Still a rather bizzare choice considering the few ex Virgin Mk3s on the network at the moment compared to Ex Virgin Mk2s)....

If we had to put up with what was on the railway now, you could kiss goodbye to many models. Unbranded Virgin Mk3s have been seen a fair amount on the railway since Virgin nearly got rid of them all, until quite recently infact. The TGS was only ever an HST vehicle, there is no loco-hauled version (well technically I think there were two, but they were non-standard and not exactly the same anyway), so really it is a case of it being odd to have had the loco hauled stock (even if they were longer lived than the unbranded HST coaches).

And after all the moaning Hornby have received for not having enough Mk2s out there, you seem to be having a go for some being released?

Hornby did redo the Lima 47 for the Blue Pullman set, which I believe sold quite well (even if it was just for the new motor and DCC socket) so it does make sense for them to release that one again.

I wonder if the ex-Lima 67 will drop into the railroad range in the next few years?

I wasn't particularly having a go at Hornby with this, just more having a moan - Weathered Ex Virgin Mk3s do seem a slightly odd choice if you look at how many have run in debranded ex Virgin livery out and about on the mainline - Yes Cotswold had a hotchpotch rake, Virgin until 2009 had a rake in ex debranded ex Virgin, Cargo D had a fair amount before repainting into BR Blue Grey and DB's Chiltern Railways has a few too, but overall - Mk2s seem to have lasted longer out and about on the mainline still conveying the ex Virgin livery - largely thanks to the 22 owned by Rivera Trains - Including the 'West Coast Set' which as of last months Cheshire Cat Tours, still does see occasional use on the mainline (and don't forget the 9+ just taken onboard by West Coast)...It's a different choice anyway!

(Edit, although to be fair, East Anglia's Mk3s took some time to repaint back in 2004 - Had forgotten about those!)

As for the Mk3 TGS in the rake - that of course only exists because of Hornbys lack of a Mk3 BFO - The loco hauled equivalent of a Mk3 TGS and only spent use on the West Coast Mainline & laterally on the Great Western mainline with FGW (Only 3 built) - But what makes the ex VT mk3 set odd, is the inclusion of the RFM in ex VT livery, but with the TGS - But this being Hornby, then mistakes are likely to come about...And why not bring out the DVT in Ex Virgin too?

As for the Ex Lima Class 47 - Im glad it's made a return again and this time now available on it's own in the Railroad range - It's last outing was as you say for the blue Pullman set and certainly did manage to see rather well - managed to get hold of 3 of them to swap chassis with my ex Lima 47s...

But my overall feeling is mixed – Yes, it’s nice to have a new class 67 and it does show some commitment towards D&E, but the various errors (still not corrected) with the VEP, and the release of yet more 1970s ex Airfix Mk2s in more new liveries – Isn’t it about time they were retired and replaced! But at least it shows they’ve woken up and listened to some – though they really do need to stop with the releasing of models in dribs and drabs – The HSTs being an example where they always seem to produce a relatively smallish sized batch of Mk3s first, then release the HST power cars…And surprise surprise all the MK3s disappear before the power cars turn up….And Why produce only one Mk3 in Wrexham & Shropshire livery - Yes, the Mk3 RFM would be the wrong tooling to use as Wrexham created their own new type of Mk3 RFM, But why only one?...And i do have to wonder as to whether the Mk2 & Mk3s in BR's Intercity Swallow livery is going to be a re-release with a more realistic version (both were announced in Last years 2011 range by the way, so nothing new there!!!)

Im afraid in this day and age, where we have the likes of what Realtrack Models, Model Rail, Murphy Models & Bachmann can produce for the price that they produce, Hornby's rehashes just don’t seem to cut much of the mustard anymore…And bearing in mind, this is even before we’ve seen any hints as to Hornbys 2012 prices!

As for the 67 - Who Knows, But having worked in a modelshop myself, the Railroad Range does certainly seem to sell rather well! (Mostly for kids, but some as project bases / remotor other models or just to keep as a whole)

Don't know if we've been 'spoiled' others like Dapol/Heljan etc but i for one am rather disappointed with Hornby's lack of new models in their 2012 D&E range, maybe next year then.....

And lets not forget Midland Mainline, who had Virgin coaches in their fleet (and de-branded power cars) for well over a year! But i do take you're point about the Mk2s (maybe next year??).

Now that is a good question.

....But my overall feeling is mixed – Yes, it’s nice to have a new class 67 and it does show some commitment towards D&E....

If I'm being honest, I can think of a few models that needed a new tooling more than the 67, but I guess it is a quick new use for the Bo-Bo chassis they made for the HST.

....And Why produce only one Mk3 in Wrexham & Shropshire livery....

Yes, I thought that when I saw it.

Tbf, to redo all of Hornbys older model would be expensive and time consuming (and there is no competition for the models as no-one wants to step on anyone's toes it seems (or when they do they get it wrong! (Heljan))).

On a train...somewhere!
Looking like a potentially long 'to buy' list of this one...like the NR 73 and GUV (not that they fit my layout), one of the 67s will definitely feature (probably 18) and a 60 (probably 99), and then I will have to consider the Northern Belle, I've wondered about getting a respray so I reckon it might have to be in there as well!! Some Mk2Ds would come in handy as well...but a new model would have been nice

Been looking forward to someone bringing out a new 142 model. Guess I'll have to wait another year.

Well, Realtrack Models do say they have another DMU under their hats, so we shall see! considering the amount of work Realtrack are putting into their 143/144s...Then If anyone is to produce a deccent 142, then it be them!
