hi there, unfortunately I wasn’t in the financial position to buy it when it came out but I’m looking again for one now. I can’t find to see one anywhere so might just give up and look into the avanti 805. Thanks for any help.

The German shop is genuine, but so remember you'll have to add UK VAT and shipping so the one on eBay might work out cheaper. Also, use a credit card if you have one to give you purchase protection

Thank you very much for your help. I have someone on Facebook marketplace offering me a brand new one for £380 plus £22 shipping. Which is an amazing price but I’m very sceptical about Facebook and I’m scared he won’t be genuine

I would be very sceptical too

As you know they're rare, so if you can afford it go for the safest option to secure one

Value added tax, the tax that gets added to most items we buy other than food, books and some other things.

As I said earlier, speak with the people at the model shop in Germany if in doubt.

It will be held at customs by whoever is handling the import. They will send notice to you of the import duty, and VAT on the cost+duty, and handling fee you owe them. This must be paid before release to you.

The commodity code for model trains is 9503003000, and there is apparently a 0% duty rate on those from Germany (hooray!).

So the payable amount is likely to be about £76.40 for VAT (depending on exchange rate used), plus handling. Royal mail charge £8 for RM products, £12 for Parcelforce. Other couriers charge different amounts, sometimes depending on the value of the imported product.

Worth checking if the quoted value on their website is inclusive or exclusive of German sales tax (which you shouldn't need to pay).

Ah, when I signed in and applied a discount code the price came down to £393 which I think is a steal. Atleast that includes VAT and I don’t have to pay anymore!

No. I think you will be stung for the UK import VAT and handling (20% of £393), and will have to reclaim the German VAT yourself if you have paid it (I'm under the assumption this is possible, but I don't know the process for online purchases). Speak to the model shop and ask them a) if they can charge without VAT, and b) if not, if there is paperwork you need to refund any German VAT paid.

Prepare yourself for a bill around the £90-100 mark to get it delivered: This is a direct result of leaving the EU Customs Union on 1st Jan 2021 (though this is to the mainland, and not NI).

The reality is that if German VAT hasn't been charged and you're being charged UK VAT (plus admin costs) at the UK border then you're not really any worse off.
