Hope valley

Hi all

My mate has decided for his birthday to travel from Manchester to Sheffield on the hope valley stopping off at a couple of pubs en-route including a stop at hathersage for lunch.

Most of the group are from Manchester except myself been from Leeds. Which ticket are we best getting as we understand we can't use certain tickets when breaking the journey.

I'd imagine the ranger ticket is best for me. But is it northern only or can I use the tpe service from Leeds to Manchester and would I be allowed to use it on x country from Sheffield to Leeds?

With the rover tickets you can use all services in the area unless a specific TOC is not allowed (IIRC this is usually Grand Central which doesn't apply to you). You'll have to check the maps to see if you can do all the journeys you want (Leeds-Manchester, Manchester-Sheffield, Sheffield Leeds).

If your friends are only doing Manchester - Sheffield and return, an off peak day ticket will allow break of journey as many times as you want.

Thanks. That's the ticket I'd spotted for me but we'd heard with a off peak return u can break the return journey but not the outbound. I'm guessing we heard wrong

Some Off-Peak Return tickets do not permit break of journey on the outward portion. If this is the case, it will be explicitly stated in the restriction text.

Off-Peak Day Returns always permit break of journey on both portions.

For the passengers from Manchester:
If travelling on the local stopping train in both directions, and after 08:14 if on a weekday, then:
Manchester Stns-Grindleford cheap day return £10.60
Grindleford-Sheffield cheap day return £4.30
Total £14.90

If travelling on the local stopping train in both directions, and before 08:15 on a weekday, then:
Manchester Stns-Grindleford day return £14.20
Grindleford-Sheffield cheap day return £4.80
Total £19.00

If returning on an express train, and travelling out after 09:14 if on a weekday, then:
Manchester Stns-Sheffield cheap day return £18.30

If returning on an express train and trevveling out before 09:14 on a weekday, then:
Manchester Stns-Sheffield open return £26.90
