The problem I find with reporting a problem with the horn to the signalman, is it sometimes slowly denigrates in a fit of the giggles. And in one case I was told I'm sure I can arrange for some cream to to help you with that problem!
Whats wrong with Ear Muffs?
Had the train travelled via grantham?
I seem to remember in one of Harold Gasson's footplate memoirs of a Castle with the whistle valve stuck in the open position.
That was remedied by the fireman climbing on to the boiler and giving the offending valve an almighty bash with the coal hammer.
I don't suppose that's possible these days.
Last year I had the opposite problem. Approaching a foot crossing I sounded the horn at the whistle board. The lever snapped off in my hand, there was no way of being able to sound the horn in the leading cab after trying several things. In the end I had to travel at 20mph for 20 miles to take the train out of service at the nearest convenient place.
There were still passengers asking 'well why do we have to go so slowly just because the horn doesn't work'? I'd have thought that was fairly obvious...
