Hi

I am going to Euston on the 11th April in the evening and coming back on the 13th at 09.00 and I'm confused about the validity of some tickets across London.

As described in this thread http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=42730&highlight=hook+to+london
I have found that a Hook to South Hampstead ticket is about £3 cheaper than a Euston ticket.

As for the cheaper South Hampstead journey, the national rail journey planner displays two prices for varying journeys, one £13.50 and one £15.15. (I'm a "child")

What is the difference between these, and where can I find the full restrictions on them?

Thanks in Advance,

Robert

The £13.50 is not via London and the £15.15 is +Any Permitted with validity for a cross London transfer on the Tube. If you're going to Euston then you'll need the £15.15 fare.

Ah ok, so going via the WLL/NLL is a 'Not London' route? I'd always remembered Kensington Olympia being on the list of London terminals... :|

The only thing I can suggest is:
Hook - London Waterloo (Open Return): £13.45 (Off Peak*)
Waterloo - Swiss Cottage (Jubilee Line): £0.65 (Single)**

*Valid if you enter London from 10.00 onwards and don't leave London between 16.00 and 19.00
**With an Oyster Card. Swiss Cottage is 250m from South Hampstead Station.

The OP doesn't actually want to go to NW8, they are only buying a ticket there because it is cheaper than Euston.

Secondly, Child Oyster fares are only available to those with an 11-15 Zip card. Those living outside London need to apply online and pay a £10 fee. In addition, if you don't have a passport which is accepted by the TfL website, you will need to collect your Zip card from one of the TfL Travel Information Centres which are at Liverpool St, Euston, Heathrow 123, Victoria and Kings +/St Pancras.

Thanks for the suggestions, but Mojo is right, a lot of faff.

Wrong I'm afraid, - there is no evening offpeak restriction out of Waterloo, only super offpeaks have a restriction.

And also wrong. There are Off Peak evening restrictions out of London Waterloo on some flows priced by TOCs other than SWT.

Given that you must have been born in 1995 (or 1996) or you'd be on adult/YP fares, Kensington Olympia was removed as a 'London Terminal' before you were born! (Source). It does seem odd that it was ever a 'London Terminal' as it would have meant that the 'Not London' fares for Cross-Country journeys would not have been valid on XC trains that went that way.

Anyway I'm sticking with my advice on the previous topic,

Alternatively Hook to South Hampstead +Any Permitted SVR (Child) is £15.15, which works out at 85p for each cross-London transfer, so this seems the best ticket to get.

I don't think there is any way to get the fare lower than that, I would be amazed if anyone can find a legitimate way to make it cheaper (but credit to them if they do!).

You have it the wrong way round. It's not a case of saying there isn't a [super] off peak restriction for travel from a particular station. It's a question of whether there is a restriction from that station for a particular ticket.

In other words, you can't say "All [Super] Off Peak [Day] tickets are not valid at this station at this time".... well unless you have analysed the restriction codes for thousands of tickets to prove that is the case ;)!

For example, you say there is no off peak restriction out of Waterloo, are you telling me I can use an off Peak to Exeter at 1700? The restrictions suggest otherwise.

I'm not sure what the validity of a Hook to London Terminals ticket is. Avantix Traveller has the text missing, and National Rail Enquiries also says it's missing. I do know it's code US.

- rjhglover says that the rtn portion of this ticket is not valid for leaving London between 1600-1900.
- swt_passenger says the rtn portion is valid for leaving London at any time in the evening peak.

Can you both provide your source so we can verify please? That would be much appreciated :)
(and I'm struggling to find where the information is available so it would be good to know!)

What I can say is that Hook to South Hampstead has validity code 2V, and the only restriction is that it is not valid before 0930 (no evening restriction at all).

I can also say that the East Coast site will happily sell an Off Peak Return from Hook to London Terminals, returning at any train in the evening peak. This suggests that swt_passenger is correct for this ticket, but the general statement that suggests it applies to all tickets isn't correct, as the validity code does need to be checked.

Yep - on SWT, the Super Off Peak restriction only applies if you are travelling to stations beyond Zone 6. A Super Off Peak Day Travelcard is still valid for travel from Waterloo at 1700 as long as you are travelling to a station within Zones 1-6.

For example, you say there is no off peak restriction out of Waterloo, are you telling me I can use an off Peak to Exeter at 1700? The restrictions suggest otherwise.
There is no Off Peak restriction on SWT priced journeys from or via Waterloo. So, an Off Peak Return from Waterloo - Exeter (rout Honiton) is valid on the 1720 train.

As another example, a CDR London - Reading route Any Permitted is not valid on the 'fast' services from Paddington in the evening peak, but can be used on any SWT service from Waterloo.

Point taken - I was just thinking of tickets from Waterloo to Hook, ie priced by SWT.

To be fair, First Class offpeaks on SWT do have restrictions - but these posts could take hours to get 100% correct...

True.

Unfortunately I made a poor choice when I said Exeter earlier (as the more expensive ticket is routed Taunton which may confuse the issue*), I should have said somewhere like Plymouth. So I will use Plymouth for this example.

I wonder what would happen if someone boarded the 1720 with an Any Permitted ticket to Plymouth. There are several possibilities.

1) Change of route excess (Cost: £0.00. Seems sensible)
2) The ticket is deemed valid anyway on the basis that a cheaper routed ticket is available for a lower price that is valid (Also seems sensible but does go against what the ticket conditions say!)
3) Change of ticket type excess from SVR to SOR (seems totally unreasonable to me)
4) Something else? [What?]

(* route Taunton is, of course, valid out of Waterloo, but not at peak times, however if going out of Waterloo via Taunton for whatever reason the likely journey would not be on the 1720 that you mention but would likely therefore to be on a train to Reading. Anyway let's ignore that ticket and use Plymouth!)
