Hook - Stafford

Hi

I'm thinking about going to Stafford sometime after June 19th, from Hook. I have a had a long hard look at many fares and I can't get it under £50 on Advance tickets. I want to go early, so 06:00-07:30 and coming back at 18:00-19:00, on a weekday. Adult, no railcards. I want to see if I can take advantage of the XC 25% off thing when you book before 31 May, but its proving difficult. The outward leg is expensive as it is early, but the inward leg i usually less than £20, without discount. I think the National Rail website needs a way to search over weeks, not just days, it takes along time going through all the dates!

Might be worth looking at via London, possibly splitting there, for outwards anyway

It seems they don't want to offer an 'advance + connections', an enquiry for just Basingstoke to Stafford on the 20th June shows the 0647 direct train at £46 which should be £34.50 with XC's 25% discount. Return in the evening a bit later at £15 Stafford to Basingstoke, so £11.25?

You'd need a separate Hook to Basingstoke return at £3.60 though (is that discountable by XC as well?) - so just about £50 seems about as low as you'll get?

Thanks for replying, it seems that if I want to go early I will have to pay more. (as usual) That does seem the best yet, thanks. Basingstoke also seems the place to choose from as XC don't do connections.
I'm almost certain splitting at London is more expensive, as there are no Advance fares this close to London and Anytime return is £30-40, which takes a sizeable amount of the 'budget. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Thanks, not sure if it has worked but I think the prices may be lower. Can it be used in conjunction with railcards, particularly YP?
