253mph Bugatti crashes into trees in Surrey
Filed 07/03/07
A rare example of the world's most expensive street-legal production car has been crashed into a tree in Surrey.
The Bugatti Veyron, which has a top speed of 253mph, was involved in an accident on a 40mph stretch of the B375 Renfree Way, Shepperton, at 1630 on Sunday (4 March). The crash occurred in heavy rain when the Veyron collided with a Vauxhall Astra van before leaving the road and hitting a tree. A pregnant woman in the Astra was taken to hospital as a precaution but later allowed to go home.
Surrey Police said the luxury car was driven by a man who had a male passenger with him and officers have reported the motorist for driving without due care and attention. The Bugatti, which suffered extensive damage to the front panels and wheels, has been transported to France for inspection by experts who will decide whether the car can be repaired or if it will become Britain's most expensive write-off.
The eight-litre, hand-built Veyron is one of 300 worldwide and one of only 12 in Britain. Examples retail for £830,000 and offer 1,001bhp, making the Bugatti the most powerful car that can currently be driven on British roads. It is understood that the model in Sunday's crash had been delivered to the owner only a week before.
