Hitchin/Stevenage-Aviemore in December

I'm heading up for Aviemore on the first weekend in December. A friend invited me on a skiing trip even though I can't ski, decent chance of a Golden Eagle though. Anyway, that would usually mean sleeper north on the 3rd/4th (Friday night/Saturday morning) and back on the 5th/6th (Sunday night/Monday morning). Thing is, all the advance fares have gone. Any idea if it would be cheaper to get the Chieftain and stay the night somewhere, especially when you factor in the positioning move up to London?

EC site has an advance available using the Chieftan on the Friday for £54.30 changing at Peterborough:

11:54 SVG (Leeds train), arr PBO 12:27
12:47 PBO arr Aviemore 19:29

or on both Thursday 2nd & Friday 3rd there is a £20.90 Advance single for Stevenage to Newcastle on the 21:20 service where could stay overnight & get eh 06:25 service following morning (£22.70) or the 07:41 (£29).
