Hit pink reader, charged for Z1 anyway

Hello, can anyone shed some light on this?

I made a journey from Twickenham to Highbury and Islington yesterday: Twickenham to Richmond (South West Trains), Richmond to H&I (Overground). I hit the pink readers but got charged the fare through C London anyway. The picture attached shows that I hit the pink readers.

It's really not worth pursuing for me, I totted up the fares for the journeys I did yesterday and I believe they come to the daily cap anyway. Nonetheless I'm curious to know for future reference.

According to the Oyster Fare Finder, to get the cheaper fare, you should have only touched the pink reader at Richmond and not at H&I.

Yes, pink readers are only for use when interchanging. I didn't expect that result though.

Isn't there a facility not to do anything if you touch a pink reader accidentally or when you shouldn't have to avoid confusion?

I am confused. Why does it say at the top that the daily total is £3.60 when the three journeys listed already add up to £7.40?

The Single Fare Finder on TfL's website clearly shows that if you touch the pink validator at Richmond then you should be charged £2.20, therefore I think there might be a bug in the system. You should ring them up to sort it out manually.

Beats me, though when I checked a day or two later the total charge for the day was showing as £8.50 as it should have been.

I had a feeling that hitting the pink reader at H&I could've been the problem. All the same I think it must be a bug that causes the problem, I don't see any way that doing so means the system should think I went through zone 1. To quote verbatim from the TFL website

If you see a pink card reader (route validator) it's worth touching your card on it - you might get a cheaper fare.

True, it does say elsewhere they are only for interchanging, but still....

If anyone has a contact to pass on system bugs then by all means. Sadly I'm not inclined to phone the helpline when with all the journeys I made that day I'll get charged the daily cap anyway.
