Before Christmas, I settled down to enjoy watching the BBC dramatisation of Small Island (which for those who don't know, concerns the experiences of 2 Jamaican men coming to the UK in the 2nd world war to join the Royal Air Force).
Now you may be wondering what this has to do with railways. The answer is that there was a scene where a soldier, who has suffered some trauma, explains to his wife how he ended up in a nursing home in Brighton. The man said that he found himself at Waterloo and just got on the first train that he saw. Now obviously I assumed that he was lying as surely he must have been at London Bridge or Victoria. Then I got to wonder if in fact there have ever been direct Waterloo to Brighton trains............ Can someone advise if there have been?
