The early 20th century bridge that carries the Luzern-Zug-Zürich line over the river Reuss is being restored over a period of several years. The bridge is of historic interest and has protected status, so it cannot simply be replaced.
Each of the bridge's 3 spans is being removed in turn by crane, then taken away for restoration off site, with a temporary structure in place to fill the gap. The first span was removed earlier this year, and was put back in place this weekend. Unfortunately I didn't get the timing right to get pictures of the crane at work. I am guessing that the central span will be removed next weekend, as the line is closed again then.
All of the work is being done over weekends, to minimise disruption to what is a very busy commuter route. Replacement buses are operating between Luzern and Ebikon (in addition to the regular bus service that runs every 7 minutes), and trains to the Gotthard and Italy are running via Verkehrshaus and Küssnacht instead of the more usual route via Rotkreuz.
