Hiroshima tram

A tram which was one of the few to withstand the dropping of the atomic bomb in 1945 has been restored and put to use on a special service in Hiroshima until the end of August. It is car 653 and runs close to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, the only building in the area to remain intact after the devastation. Apparently an 85 year old female survivor who worked both as driver and conductor on the trams at the end of the Second World War was present at the inauguration of the service. The tram itself, although damaged, was one of three able to be repaired and saw regular service until 2006.

Much like the Dome, the Model 650 trams are enduring symbols of the bombing. Indeed, two other 650s (Nos. 651 & 652) are still in regular service in the city's tram network, albeit in a green and cream livery.
