Not solely to blame though. As much as the Police were culpable, other organisations seem to be escaping the attention their actions deserve. I'm beginning to get quite annoyed about that.

of course they are not solely to blame. However, their actions on the day were the main cause of the disaster. There were many contributory factors but the actions of the police were the main cause.

It goes without saying that all those responsible should face up to their responsibility.

There is a saying on another forum "The holes in the Swiss Cheese must line up" - in other words any accident isn't caused by one single factor but by many things coming together. The best thing is to learn from what happen in an attempt to prevent future occurrences .

The attempts to cover up are shocking though

It suited too many vested interests, from the Police to the FA to Sheffield Wednesday for the truth to be hidden. This disaster would shame a banana republic.

This disaster would shame a banana republic.

I've started wading my way through the report (which can be found here for those interested) and from just reading the summary of each chapters contents it's becoming clear that this is most certainly the case. The level of mismanagement at every level and by every organisation is truly astonishing. It's hard to describe really how bad it is.

I read a harrowing account from a lowly PC (edited) on the Beeb site yesterday. In it he describes poor behaviour from a minority of fans which seems to have been a minor contributory factor to what happened. He then goes on to talk about the breathtaking incompetence, the disorganisation, the loss of control, and then the sheer horror of events. And how he was sent away for a meal break when people were dying. Very uncomfortable reading I can tell you.

As an aside this was not the first cover up by the South Yorkshire Police was it?

In the Miners dispute of 1984/85 it was the same force that caused the mayhem at Orgreave. In 1991 they paid out £420,000 to 39 miners. They did just like they did at Hillsborough try to put all the blame on everyone but themselves.

Yes 313103 - that's another very uncomfortable part of this sorry tragedy.

I personally have little doubt that the striking miners were demonised by the establishment and media in 1984/5, and that what has been revealed about Hillsborough merely illustrates the length to which organisations like South Yorkshire Police (and I'm sure they were not the only ones) sought to mainpulate things at that time.

I would hope, but I'm not convinced, that with information so much more accessible these days, that no organisation would even contemplate about doing the same thing now. I also hope that as it has all been uncovered, that this will further deter anyone who thinks along the same lines...

There may even be hope for the reputation of Arthur Scargill to be somewhat improved, after what has been revealed in the "demonisation" factors that were employed at the time of the miner's strike by certain bodies.

I would recommend anyone interested to read the studies made by the Glasgow University Media Group which I firts became aware of in 1994. It mad eme question everything I had seen and heard in the media during the strike.
