Which side of the train is best to sit on for scenery on the HML, east or west?
On the left northbound you get views down Loch Garry and Loch Ericht which are two of my faves. On the sleeper I would ask to be woken before Dalwhinnie and once opened the blind to Loch Garry stretching into the distance - it was memorable.
On the right northbound you would get Beinn a Ghlo and the hills above Blair Atholl, then Rothiemurchus and the Cairngorms at Aviemore. The latter would be even better if sitting left southbound. That view from the platform at Aviemore is worth arriving early to enjoy.
You can't beat 1st Class on the HST for this trip. Well worth the extra few pounds - and that's all it is. And you get dinner/breakfast thrown in too.
Southbound on the chieftain on the left is cracking on a winters morning in the snow. Daylight is breaking through and it looks amazing.
