Which side of the train is best to sit on for scenery on the HML, east or west?

Hard to say as both sides have stunning scenery in places, buy 2 seats and flit from side to side is my suggestion.

On the left northbound you get views down Loch Garry and Loch Ericht which are two of my faves. On the sleeper I would ask to be woken before Dalwhinnie and once opened the blind to Loch Garry stretching into the distance - it was memorable.

On the right northbound you would get Beinn a Ghlo and the hills above Blair Atholl, then Rothiemurchus and the Cairngorms at Aviemore. The latter would be even better if sitting left southbound. That view from the platform at Aviemore is worth arriving early to enjoy.

Just beg, plead, prey and keep everything crossed, or whatever else you think will work, for good weather.

Both sides are great. Don't worry. The train is slow enough that going from one side to another will work fine.

I love the sleeper but from the berths you'll struggle to see both sides. You can't beat 1st Class on the HST for this trip. Well worth the extra few pounds - and that's all it is. And you get dinner/breakfast thrown in too.

Whatever, enjoy. It's amazing.

That is what I will be doing in 8 days. 1st class KGX-INV and back on the sleeper. Can't wait!

Did just that a few weeks backs on a lovely crisp Friday morning (20th Feb). Sat on the right (bay of 4) but because of the large windows the views in all directions are amazing.

I've always preferred sitting on the left Southbound and Northbound. don't really know why. I'm a bit OCD about it and get a bit huffy to myself if I can't do this! You get a great mix of scenery on both sides.
