I suppose I should clarify that- the Iraqis are a skillful and enterprising people (and have been for millennia) so it's probably not surprising that they want a HS rail link to move them into the 21st century and into the wealth of their Arab neighbours. Nevertheless, for a country which was in the grips of insurgency only a few years ago to be getting on with linking their two main cities by 155 mph running, while all we have in the way of high speed rail is a glorified extension of the French rail network (bring on the controversy ) is quite extraordinary. Great for Iraq, a reminder to the UK government to get their act together and see that this is the way the world is going

Well by the pronunciation of your post, it seems as you're troubled by the fact that Iraq will have more HSLs than UK...

Anyway. Back to the thread, I think it's a much more stable place and the first start of building a nation is it's railways. Not surprised the East hates the West so much, especially when it comes to railways. Good luck to them, at least they won't be bogged down with red tape, demolishing decent houses on the way, protest meetings etc. All they will have to contend with is the desert, oh and the odd suicide bomber.
