Yes they will, the reason why the 62 takes the route it does is because the depot didn't want to run Solos up Winnats Pass in the winter and weren't entirely keen in the summer, besides which Winnats Pass is narrower and steeper than anything the 199 goes round. Stagecoach may be happy taking open top deckers round, which are shorter and more maneuverable than a 12-metre sd, in the summer and that is their business but doesn't mean others are happy doing it under different circumstances with different vehicles, timetables & service patterns and I know they get complaints about it as a number were made to High Peak asking us to tell them to stop as the road isn't suitable due to a joint leaflet for the tourist services around Castleton being issued with both operators details on (and they may have confused the bus operator details with the local council).
I could see the case for a different route in winter, but I would dispute that the width of the road means that it is a non-starter. As I said, the 199 heads through roads that barely fit the bus on a good day!

Hulleys often used Evoras on the 257 when it ran via Winnats without any trouble. The biggest issue you get is when some cyclist decides to be a hero and crawls up at 2mph holding all the traffic up as the road isn't wide enough to overtake safely. There is a good case for a foot and cycle path being built beside the road to be honest.

Great then, shouldn't be an issue, apart from in winter. I don't think the PDNP would permit a shared use path alongside sadly, due to concerns about the impact on the landscape.

I guess makes sence although hulleys evoras used it but was wondering why they don't just take the 62 up there into chapel then buxton as it saves about 20 mins and edale don't really need a bus due to train and they can still serve mam tor along the main road and potentially blue John cavern where stagecoach peak sightseer turns around the turning circle by the main road which I think makes more sence as they can use the bsip from the 62 and extend the 272 they now run from sheffield to chaple then buxton which may allow connections for manchester.
Is the PDNP peak district national park if so what duristiction do they have in having a shared bus path between 62 and stagecoach? Do they just block the registration for the new route?

Any news on when the evoras high peak are aplenty getting this year are comming?

There’s no train from Buxton / Chapel to Edale so the bus is very useful. When I’ve seen it there have been quite a few walkers getting off at Edale.

One of the important links has ended up as the to/from Edale Station for Castleton & Mam Tor as well as a Buxton/Chapel to/from Castleton link so even if the depot acquiesced to Winnats Pass a extension up to Edale Station would still be wanted which makes issues interworking with the 272. A point to remember on this is that High Peak don't run all the 272 (& it isn't alternate trips which would give an even timetable) and whilst First exist you can't necessarily make a useful or workable timetable that runs to Buxton that fits schedules, resources and needs for both halves.

I'm not sure where this certainty that High Peak are getting Evoras comes from, there is a big batch for the group due this year but no firm allocation ever existed, there was an initial idea of almost every depot getting a pair but that was never likely to be the final plan and other orders have since been made and services have been gained which change the balance of orders. They may turn up, they may be replaced by something else or they may not receive anything.

I was under the impression that Dove Holes won't be getting any of the Evora allocation

Last I heard they weren't as the original plan had changed but I can't guarantee that someone won't change the plan again or circumstances change the requirements. Any plan may change until the buses arrive depending on the needs of the business. They are due some new buses of their own this year, the two short E200MMCs are only on loan from Leicester, but what & when has changed a couple of times so details are unclear.

New buses have materialised in the form of two new Solo SRs, 3003/4 (YJ25 EFC/D). As a result, Solo M710SE 238 (YJ07 VRW) has been withdrawn.

On the 272, fleet liveried Citaros 804/9 are the regular performers, however due to vehicle reliability issues one of the two 8.9m E200MMCs (5009/10) have been working the shorter of the two running boards.

Seems to be a good few weeks at Dove Holes, an E200 MMC has arrived today in base red colours (seemingly for skyline). YX25 OJW (another has arrived but currently waiting for the reg)

797 is also on loan to HP.

Bus Lists on the Web lists the other as YX25OJV, although that said, that and OJW are shown as for D&G there!

Edale's links are useful as others have said, walkers heading for Kinder Scout and Castleton in the other direction. I can't see extension of the 272 all the way to Buxton going down well with Stagecoach, plus Chapel is a better hub for passengers (shorter ride to Manchester Airport/Stockport/Hazel Grove) and High Peak (easier to reach from Dove Holes depot with several routes a smaller bus can get up I believe, while Dove Holes depot into Buxton only has one real way in down the virtual car park that is Fairfield Road without miles of diversions).

and it would not be advisable to send a large bus via it at say 7am on a January morning.
Then they’ll divert the service like any other operator would on any other unsuitable road in icy conditions. For example - Stagecoach Oldham don’t serve the top of sholver on their 82s in Icy weather.
Hulleys often used Evoras on the 257 when it ran via Winnats without any trouble.
Amen to that. As one of the regular 257c drivers theres absolutely no issues with taking a bus up winnats pass if you actually know the size of your vehicle - those that don’t so well can expect to be waiting all day as theres absolutely no chance anyone is waiting to let you up!
From a commercial stance, winnats pass is a very good idea. Lots of passengers would get on the bus just to have a ride up and down as walking doesn’t appeal to everybody.
It was actually planned at one point to extend the 272 to glossop on weekdays under hulleys but then the 6 occured and the rest is history…

Made a couple of journeys today on well loaded TransPeak buses between Matlock and Buxton.

But it puzzled me to see that when the TransPeak diverts off the A6 to serve the picture postcard village of Ashford in the Water the northbound service to Buxton continues along the A6 and then travels south through the village (like the southbound buses do)before rejoining the A6.

This means that the three southbound bus stops in the village are served by buses in both directions, however, to add to the confusion there are prominent High Peak TransPeak bus stop flags on the opposite (north bound) of the road but are not served by TransPeak.

Pretty certain back in the day when the TransPeak ran from Manchester and onwards to Nottingham buses operated in both directions in Ashford?

And to think it's not long since High Peak were threatening to withdraw the service, claiming poor loadings...

I noticed that last year when I used the Transpeak. I wondered if it was to avoid buses 'meeting' - it's notable that the Red Peak Sightseer follows the same direction through Ashford. The roads are fairly narrow and parking gets worse by the year, so I'd imagine if two buses did meet it could be troublesome.

As an aside, there is a marked bus turning point in the village that I've never seen used. I wonder what the history if that is, and when it was last actually used by a service?

To be fair that was between Derby and Matlock, I don't think anyone could argue Matlock to Buxton wasn't profitable!

The problem was actually the turn out of the north end of the village back onto the A6, a combination of road speed and a slight bend south of the junction meant concerns were raised around buses pulling out (fast moving cars finding slow moving, but accelerating, buses unexpectedly around a corner).

As others have said, the northern section between Matlock & Buxton were never under threat it was the Matlock to Derby section where both the railway & Trent (particularly south of Belper) limit the traffic on the Transpeak itself for more local traffic.

Yes, it makes sense regarding turning back onto the A6 northbound, but it might be an idea for Derbyshire County Council/High Peak to remove all the TransPeak bus stop flags that are on the wrong side of the road seeing as though the TransPeak no longer observes them…!

Last time I caught a Transpeak northbound from Bakewell, the parked cars in Ashford in the Water didn't seem too bad. But it was still a struggle to get through. You can certainly see why buses follow a one way loop... Those with a good memory will remember that Trentbarton coach 56 met it's end at Ashford, when it had a thermal incident.

Sounds about right that the council would make the bus operators take the pain of solving the problem! It would seem much more sensible to extend the 40 limit an extra mile or so out of Bakewell to beyond this junction. You've got a busy junction with the A6020 and foot traffic near the Sheepwash Bridge that would also benefit from the reduction, and let's face it, 10mph slower for a mile is going to add 20 seconds to your journey.

Might need a speed camera as well though for the motorcyclists!

They could update the one between Bakewell and Ashford that has X18 on while they are at it!

As to the TP, I was on it on May Day Bank Holiday, departing Bakewell towards Buxton at 1559, just a handful of passengers and half of those got off at Ashford.

I do think tho if it was marketed a bit better or a few changes was made Transpeak could be a alot better service.
For example if trentbarton promoted it there end as they own half of high peak but then again I guess that will take numbers of the sixes which they probably won't do or even again rebrand transpeak under the sixes brand and either extend sixes from bakewell to buxton even if it uses some highpeak drivers for the leg to keep costs down? Or highpeak runs a few journeys kind of like how nottsderby used to have a ilkeston flyer bus (Scania 600) and did a few runs or how trent used to run along side arriva for the x38 or stagcoach for pronto as the current transpeak route to matlock from derby is only about 10mins quicker than the 6.1
Or if they could incorporate into the sixes running as at the moment there's 4 routes which gives a derby belper 15min frequency if they added the transpeak in so it counts as 5 routes so 12mins derby belper frequency so every30ish minutes there's a bus to matlock (except still run along the A6 kind of like a 6.1x) if there's enough passenger usage as not only it could pick up more passengers from derby to belper to help usage of transpeak
I was curious tho do alot people use it between cromford and belper along the A6 through whatstandwell and ambergate where the 6.1 don't serve?

This would completely butcher the reliability of the sixes, which is already fairly unsteady during high season. The Transpeak and Sixes, despite having similar routes, serve quite different clientele. TP is better for longer journeys from Derby/Belper to Matlock/Buxton, 6.1 is better for more local journeys around Belper and Wirksworth. Merging them would slow down the service as a whole and make the bus a much less attractive way to travel. Remember there is also a rail service that would take these passengers away if you messed around too much with the bus services, so the operators have to be careful with their decision making
Or highpeak runs a few journeys kind of like how nottsderby used to have a ilkeston flyer bus (Scania 600) and did a few runs or how trent used to run along side arriva for the x38 or stagcoach for pronto as the current transpeak route to matlock from derby is only about 10mins quicker than the 6.1
This would infact complicate matters and increase costs. If it works under one operator, why would you introduce a second one?
Or if they could incorporate into the sixes running as at the moment there's 4 routes which gives a derby belper 15min frequency if they added the transpeak in so it counts as 5 routes so 12mins derby belper frequency so every30ish minutes there's a bus to matlock (except still run along the A6 kind of like a 6.1x) if there's enough passenger usage as not only it could pick up more passengers from derby to belper to help usage of transpeak
If I've read your comment right, you want to rebrand Transpeak to make another service under the Sixes brand? I think that would also complicate the running of the Sixes and hinder the reliability, as I mentioned above its better to differentiate the two brands for the different types of passenger

No, leave Transpeak alone. The general travelling public aren't interested in it being a silent partner in Wellglade and probably consider it the express along that corridor..
