We all know about the 6%... but how about 50%+?...

The fare from Leicester to Nottingham or Derby with a railcard has gone from £6.10 before Christmas, to £9.80 now. Adding a railcard brings the fare up to £12.00 for some reason.

This is really going to damage my budget, especially given there was (seemingly) no warning or even mention that railcards now have a limit.

£3.70 is a lot of money to someone like me. That's nearly what I spend on food each day.

£12 is the minimum railcard fare to travel before 10am. If the ticket is less than £12 then you are better off not using the railcard, err, discount to travel before that time.

Oh, has it always been this way? I've never travelled that early before (9:54). Sorry if I'm mistaken.

Pretty much. Certainly for as long as I've had a YP railcard (5+ year now).

Also 09:54 early!? Really!? ;)

I think there's an exception in July and August but for the rest of the year a minimum fare applies before 10am. Also be careful if you purchase a ticket from a ticket machine just before 10am for a departure just after 10am, the ticket machine won't give the discount but the ticket office usually will.

I remember catching trains at around 6:30am when I was going to university open days using a YP railcard, obviously things have changed since then! Although in those days the Saver return had a lower minimum fare than the Day return and as most Universities I visited were over 50 miles away the Saver was the cheapest option anyway.
