Hello all, does anyone on here happen to be a a train maintenance tech? I’ve previously been a HGV tech for around 12 years but left as I had no interest in it any more (I don’t think the company I worked for helped) my end goal is to hopefully one day be a train driver but with the understanding that’s this could potentially take a few years I was just wondering if it was worth a shot using the qualifications I already have and using them to still be involved in the railway sector. I did my work experience for school in the Arriva Bristol train depot and enjoyed it but that was back around the year 2000.
This way I could familiarise myself with the trains, how they’re operated, how they work, common faults that might occur and generally just be working with the things I love....... Trains
I’m after any advise on comparable the two are, I’ve always looked at vehicles no matter the make and just thought of them as being nuts and bolts. I would assume they use the same systems used the same way, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical systems as well as general servicing of the Diesel engine. Also, if the pay were comparable, I’ve looked online for jobs and there’s a few at the Hitachi center in Bristol to work on the new class 800/801 but no mention of pay. I know the average HGV tech is between £12-£14ph is it the same (or hopefully more) for train techs.
Has anyone else before made the switch successfully?
I’m prob just gonna apply for this Hitachi job any way and see where it goes but just thought I’d ask the question on here first anyway. Thanks all to who reply
