Hertford options

Some friends are considering moving to Hertford. So begins the decision as to which train line to choose for travelling to London to work.

Currently she comes in from Billericay to Liverpool St and then walks to the office at Bank.

I know the two Hertford stations are only 15 mins walk apart so which one should she align herself to?

Commutes 5 days a week with the occasional week night and weekend out in town.

The Hertford East service is slow and infrequent but the Hertford North line has different peak and off peak destinations (KX and Moorgate).

Moorgate is walkable from the office at Bank but KX is a tube ride which is not ideal.

Advice on frequency, costs and tricks of the trade appreciated.

I suggest trying both lines and she can see which she prefers.

There' no need to commit to either of them. Tickets are issued from Hertford Stns to London Terminals.

The Hertford East service is slow and infrequent but the Hertford North line has different peak and off peak destinations (KX and Moorgate).

Moorgate is walkable from the office at Bank but KX is a tube ride which is not ideal.

The trains run to Moorgate during normal working hours.

At weekends or very late evening if she needs to go to/from the Moorgate area, she could simply use the Hertford East line into Liverpool St. Or take the Met from King's Cross to Moorgate (no extra cost for that, and the Met is a sub-surface line so it doesn't take long to get to/from the platforms).

I agree with Yorkie, the booking office staff at North are quite good when it comes to split tickets indeed I believe a very popular one is a ticket between Hertford and Crews Hill then a travelcard which I think saves the user a reasonable bit of money.

What times do they expect to be travelling from Hertford and from London? I ask because there are a few trains in the morning which are limited stops from North and are very popular as a result.

So there is a splitting opportunity? That would mean the selection of the KX line over Liverpool St or vice versa?

Another plus for Hertford North over East is that the last train home from London doesn't leave until 0106 – compared to a paltry 2340 to the eastern station.

Have used both extensively. To me, the North line is better (perceive less disruptions) and of course trains run later at night. However, I don't like the lack of announcements onboard the train on the North lines.

BTW, the walk is more than 15 mins. Probably about 25 mins. But depending on where they end up in Hertford, one of the stations will definitely be closer.

Best thing I can suggest they do is for them to make enquires at North station as the staff will be able to offer the best advice as to what tickets to get, I'm not sure if staff at East station are familiar with the splitting methods that North use...

As to the times they're travelling, there's a few semi fast services from North and Moorgate which should suit them very well - as to no onboard announcements that's only because the 313s are not fitted with them other then driver announcements although 317s/365s are fitted with them.
