Hertford North to Honiton

Now things have settled down - our elderly friends wish to resume their visits to Devon.

They haven't been for two years, and were initially reluctant to travel, due to the complexity of rail travel across London.

And then I consulted this helpful forum,and thanks to Hadders, the route below was worked out - so no complicated connections - and no carting of heavy bags up and down stairs.

The stress was removed from the journey, so they could relax,enjoy a gin and tonic on the train! and look forward to a relaxing break in beautiful Devon!

Is this route still available?

Hertford North - Highbury & Islington
Cross platform interchange at Highbury to the Victoria Line southbound
At Oxford Circus change to the southbound Bakerloo Line which is also a cross platform connection
Alight at Waterloo and join the train to Honiton there.

Yes, that's probably the best option. Alternatives would include taking the Overground from Highbury & Islington to Clapham Junction, or a bus from Essex Road or Moorgate to Waterloo.

Yes this route is still available and is probably the simplest for your needs.

The only downside of the Bakerloo line are the curved platforms at Waterloo resulting in some large gaps when alighting. I now avoid the Bakerloo line at Waterloo due to this. Also a long escalator up from the Bakerloo platforms at Waterloo. I think the lifts at Waterloo only serve the Jubilee line.

An alternative option I tend to use with luggage is to use Thameslink from Finsbury Park to London Bridge and then on to either Waterloo East or Jubilee Line to Waterloo. Lifts are available at London Bridge and Waterloo.

Moorgate services normally use platform 1 and Thameslink services are normally at platform 2 so cross-platform.
Occasionally some of the Thameslinks use platform 3 at short notice but I think they are all booked for platform 2. The few occasions when they did use platform 3 was when a Kings Cross stopper was running late

I think the bus may not be an option as they would have to lift the luggage - although on wheels on and off.
