I'm trying to arrange to travel from Hereford to Glasgow Airport but only fares with FC element showing are Anytime for single ticketing. Happy to just get as far as Glasgow Central and get the bus from there. I'm struggling to work out where to split tickets to get best fares and/or more FC.

Aiming to travel to arrive afternoon Friday 24 June, more than happy to break overnight on way (ie leave Thursday) to make most of journey. I have Disabled Railcard and prefer Virgin to TPE. Logical route of via Crewe seems expensive, and Crewe would not be first choice of an overnight.

Any advise gratefully received, Thanks.

£76.90 / FC £107.90

It's almost impossible to travel late afternoon from Hereford to Glasgow Airport
What time do you need to be at Glasgow Airport?

Presumably you want to change trains as few times as possible
The next issue is access at Paisley Gilmour Street for the bus to the Airport, personally I would dump that and use the bus from Glasgow Central, the time would be about the same but the change would be much easier

15:53 Hereford - Crewe 17:28
18:09 Crewe - Glasgow C 21:17
21:35 Glasgow C - Paisley GS 21:50
This would be my preference, Glasgow city will be busy, but not as bad as 23:18 below
or Bus from Glasgow C at 21:25, 21:40, etc

17:53 Hereford - Crewe 19:25
20:09 Crewe - Glasgow C 23:18
23:45 Glasgow C - Paisley GS 23:55
Plus, on a Friday night in Paisley I would avoid this!
or Bus from Glasgow C at 23:40 (note hourly)

Hereford - Crewe = £15.60
Crewe - Glasgow = £35.30 (advance) / £51.15 (anytime) / £62.05 (FC advance) / £101.30 (FC anytime)
Bus Glasgow C - Glasgow Airport
It is also possible to save more by changing Crewe - Preston - Glasgow (£14.85 advance) leaving Crewe at 18:18 and arriving into Glasgow at 21:47
Personally, this would be my choice as this will be a Pendolino from Preston as against a Voyager throughout

You can book the bus as part of a through ticket (either from Paisley GS, no extra charge) or from Glasgow Central (£4.50 day return, not sure what the single fare is) but only at a ticket office, most / all of the websites don't seem to be able to cope with this. Some vague costs in this leaflet http://www.scotrail.co.uk/sites/default/files/documents/Travel_connections_2010_V8.pdf. There is also a taxi rank at Paisley GS and the fare is around £5-6.

Best fare looks to be on the Friday 0547 ex Hereford £15.60 SDS to Crewe arr 0722, then 0732 VT Pendolino Crewe to Glasgow Central £23.75 (FC), £7.25 standard, arriving 1036. I can recommend the FC breakfast on this train!

You only get 10min to change at Crewe and I expect it will mean a quick flit in the lift from p5 to p6, so some risk here.

Later trains from Crewe are Voyagers with limited FC capacity and therefore no big FC advance discount.

I looked at Warrington BQ (where all the Pendolinos call) but they don't connect well from Hereford via Chester - you would end up on the more expensive Voyagers again.

Hope it helps.

Just noticed the £23.75 FC advance fare on the 0732 from Crewe to Glasgow is also shown from Nantwich where the 0549 ex Hereford calls at 0716. If you go this way, buy a Nantwich-Glasgow ticket and that should protect you from having to rebook if you miss the connection at Crewe. At least that's my reading of the rules - only an amateur!

Oddly their are cheap standard advance fares to Glasgow on these trains from Shrewsbury and Whitchurch (£10.55) as well, but no First class fares, and no advance fares at all from Hereford.

hereford - paddington - euston - scotland via sleaper.

10 Min is the minimum connection time at Crewe in any case, so at least you are somewhat protected in the event of delays, although of course if you are on the way to catch a flight you may not be happy with this option.

Are you flying from Glasgow, if so I would catch a flight from either Cardiff or Birmingham to Glasgow as it would probably be cheaper than the train.

My ex used to do Worcester-Oxford-Scotland quite a bit, particularly in the days when Virgin ran XC.
