Hemel Hempstead

Anyone got any idea what work is being done at Hemel? There's been guys working by the sidings for ages now. Also, the track in the sidings all looks fairly new. Anyone shed any light on it?

Hemel is getting lifts (as are Berkhamsted and Leighton Buzzard) but your description doesn't sound connected

I know they're putting the lifts in - had the punters wittering on about wishing they'd hurry up with it!!!! Just wondered what they were doing by the sidings and that.

Watford Junction will be undergoing major works shortly - could be that infrastructure trains will be held at Hemel between work sessions at Watford? (Bearing in mind Watford doesn't have much in the way of sidings these days!)

Cheddington is also getting lifts, or there's certainly something being done to the footbridge there.

That cattle dock at Hemel has always struck me as a sensible place for a south-facing bay platform for terminating London services.

Do you have any source for Cheddington getting lifts? It's the first I've heard of it and I can't find anything to back it up!

Hemel is used as a termination point at times of disruption. The down slow platform is actually bi-directional, to allow access to the crossover and bay platform there. AFAIK, Cheddington is just being updated, including a new footbridge. The platforms are being looked at as well, the up slow is looking decidedly dodgy in places.

Almost certainly!

I know it's a little OT but if anyone has more info on Cheddington that'd be welcome.

I've often thought that - it could either be used for slower, shorter shuttles which leave 1 min after a faster train (providing Apsley, KL and Bushey stops which could be removed from Tring/MK trains), or possibly for WLL trains too.

Skip stopping is probably best though, as used in the peaks.

And one day, it could even host Crossrail terminators - if stock constraints and lack of demand mean that sending 8tph to Tring is complete overkill.

Skip stopping is a pain in the arse. There's an early morning Tring service that leaves there and does first stop Apsley. Twice I've worked the job, twice the driver has stopped at Berkhamsted. Not cool, especially when there's a platform full of punters.
