Help with Sectional Appendix

Im new to this forum so please forgive me if this post is in the wrong section. Can anyone tell me what NRN and CSR are in the top right hand corner of the pages just below signalling and remarks in the S.A, is there also anywhere I can find out which linespeed is which when theres more than one printed above/below each other or in boxes, thanks

NRN- national radio network: fitted to freight loco's and non DOO (driver only operated trains).
CSR- cab secure radio: fitted to DOO trains

Both are types of radio for driver -signaller contact

ref speeds: the higher speed is for DMU's HST's etc the lower is for locomotives and freight

The bottom figure is for passenger/postal/light loco trains and the top figure is for all other trains. Letters such as MU/HST/SP etc denote the type of train that can use the higher speed.

Sorry - why is there this difference?

NRN is a one way system, pretty old now (circa 1980), not exactly good quality and has patchy coverage and is not secure. Only tends to be used in an emergency.

CSR is cab secure radio for DOO trains. Signallers can patch other callers through to drivers and even make emergency announcements themselves. Coverage is continuous and quality is good.

The whole lot is due to be superseded by GSM-R.

CSR isnt exclusive to DOO trains though, its used on Merseyrail too (and probably other places)
