Help with my bash!

Hi guys, i'm in London on the 26th, with a Z1-6 travelcard, i'm wondering which of these I can do with the card/ the cheapest.

A Class 442 journey
A Intercity 225 Journey (or just some loco haulage)
Clapham Junction
A class 444
District line to Upmister, C2C return
A fun Thameslink journey (possibly through St P, my first TL journey)
HS1 service

Notes about some of your points:

442: Travel from Victoria to East Croydon (or vice versa) on a Brighton express train, but some of these are worked by 377's.

444: Travel from Clapham Junction to Waterloo on a Weymouth train. (In the other direction, Clapham Junction is pick up only) The journey isn't long though.

Upminster by District line/c2c: Perfectly possible

442/444/Upminster for these journeys are all covered by the travelcard; HS1 is not.

You'll also be fine with Thameslink on your travelcard. You can do East Croydon up through London to West Hampstead Thameslink. That might tie up well with the earlier mentioned Brighton Express service which may be 442 worked...

I would get an A Stock in, while you still can!

Not sure this should be in the fares section, but not sure where to move it to.

My thoughts exactly, though I guess if I were to ask the best way to enjoy HS1 on the cheap? That would make it valid in this section.

As you can see by my avatar I have been on A-stock long enough to need a rest!

Could I do Stratford on a Capitalstar? Then get a 90 hauled service back to Liverpool Street? Do all the Norwich expresses stop at Stratford?

Only half of the Norwich-London 90s stop at Stratford, so it's hourly in each direction only . I think it may be uplift / set down only too, I'll check.

The 90+Mk3 sets call on their way to Liverpool Street at xx:45 past the hour. Not sure if their are pick up/set down restrictions.

Yep, uplift to Norwich and set down to London only, sorry. Closest thing to a 90 bash would be Liverpool St / Stratford-Chelmsford (hourly service).

I guess Chelmsford is out side of the travel zones?

Also, Chilterns 172s, London Overgrounds 172s, and the 18:06(?) Loco hauled service to Banbury, any of these do able on my travel card?

LO 172 would be fine on the GOBLIN. Chiltern 172s would be OK to West Ruislip (the border), but I don't think the LHCS to Banbury calls anywhere within the Zones.

Chelmsford is well outside the border, yes.

You could always get an extension to Denham / Chelmsford etc if need be.

Don't know how strict they are with the Norwich trains, but it could be expensive if they decide to charge you. Chelmsford is well outside the Zones.

LO 172s of course, not sure about the Chiltern ones. Chiltern LHCS you'd need an extension too, they're on the express(ish) diagrams.

I think i'll take enough cash to cover Stratford to Chelmsford just in case, but will do it anyway, best to do a Stratford to Liverpool street just incase so I don't end up in Colchester!

I know that some guards are lenient but don't just expect, speak to the guard before travel to ask, explain that you need that particular Cl90 for haulage and ask if there is any chance of travelling to Stratford. I certainly wouldn't just get on eventhough I know there won't be a ticket check.

Agreed. Make it obvious that you are an enthusiast and are just there for traction. If you ask, they will almost certainly let you do so, but if you are complacent then expect to end up in Essex!

On a side note about the Norwich trains. I have done this twice before. I know that they are meant to be set down only in the up direction, however on both occasions, it was actually shown on the departure screen and announced at Stratford, therefore contradicting information shown in the timetable. Of course I take the most up-to-date information (departure screen) as true and boarded without hesitation.

So if I wanted to do a whole journey interchanging between GOBLIN, Thameslink, C2C, starting at Euston, and ending up at Waterloo travelling on a 444 preferably, what would you guys come up with?

Well you can only get out to Upminster IIRC on a Z1-6, and you can only get a 444 from Woking, well outside the Z6 boundary (Clapham Jn is strictly U/S on 444 runs AFAIK).

You can easily do CLJ>WAT on a 444, they are not set down only in this direction (but are pick up only heading the other way)

No Thameslink service from Moorgate. My guess is take the tube from Liverpool Street to Kings Cross/St Pancras and catch Thameslink from there

Farringdon is a far easier interchange on weekdays than St Pancras, even with the works going on there, so would recommend changing there instead onto Thameslink

its easier, but a shorter bash if he's going southbound, plus he gets some running on AC. Was thinking he could bash Thameslink to East Croydon then head back to Victoria on a 442.

AFAIK there are only a couple of SN diagrams for 442s: the rest are for the Gatwick Express, which of course pass through East Croydon non-stop.
