Hi guys,
I'm new here, and have recently been made redundant. So I'm looking to get on the rails as its always something I fancied to do, the problem is I'm 31 with no experience ... I'm looking into doing my medical soon. Once passed I will then want to do the 10 day induction and PTS course but my problem is the sponsor ... Is there any company that will supply the course and sponsor? I'm based in Manchester ... Hopefully once I get this done I can work for the rails. Any help would be appreciated please and I'm sorry if this question has been abused haha.
Regards
Daniel

Okay I've found a training centre course - this is what they emailed me, can someone tell me in normal English what it all means please:-

Hi,

Thank you for your enquiry; please see below information regarding the PTS and ICI as requested:

Since July 2016 it is mandatory that in order to work on the railway not only do you need to hold a PTS Competence (with a NWR Medical, NWR D&A and hold a valid sponsor), you also need to hold an ICI Competence, this is a MUST for all new delegate/s wishing to get onto the railway:

PTS Information
A PTS Course (inclusive of DCCR) will last 2 days. These courses can be held at either of any of our training centre, these include Coventry (CV4 9UT), Kent, (ME3 7TS) and Stockport (SK7 5EG).

Within the course your delegate/s will be trained on PTS (Personal Track Safety), AC (AC Lines) and DCCR (direct current conductor rail; the live 3rd rail). The PTS AC is the very least that a delegate will need in order to get onto a track.

The pre-requisites before attending a PTS course are:

. A valid Network Rail Standard Medical; this is where delegate/s will be assessed on blood pressure, sight, hearing and a few more factors before being supplied a medical level based on these tests.
. A valid Network Rail Standard Drugs & Alcohol test: delegate/s will have to supply a urine sample at a health care provider and also take part in a breathalyser test, these are PARAMOUNT for a PTS course. If a positive sample is given for either a Drugs or Alcohol test then the delegate/s will be banned from the Network Rail Infrastructure for 5 years, delegate/s will also be tested throughout their career. Failure to provide a sample is also classes as a 'fail' by NWR.
. A valid Sentinel Approved Primary Sponsor

We at UKRS Training can offer the PTS Training however if you were interested in sponsorship and this was something that you could not supply yourself then our sister company Bowen Projects can assist with this. A Sponsor on the railway is the equivalent of an employer in any other job, they will put forward delegates for upskilling and also provide work (if available) to delegate/s.

If you were just interested in the course (as you would like to do the pre-requisites yourselves) then the course breakdown is:
. PTS; £170
. AC Lines
. DCCR; £95 (optional for delegate/s)
. Sentinel notifications; £3.22 each; there is the option of having 4 (which is mandatory) or 5, the breakdown for this is 1 for PTS, 1 for AC, 1 for DCCR, 1 for ICI and if you wish 1 for the LU section of ICI also (the LU element allows delegate/s to work on the London Underground)
. ICI Computer Test & Invidulation; £35
. VAT @ 20%
. = £375.46 (if LU section is required the price will be £379.32)

If you were interested in both the course and the sponsorship (including the pre-requisites) the whole price breakdown is:
. Network Rail Standard Medical & D&A; £135
. Bowen Projects Sponsorship; £100
. PTS; £170
. AC Lines
. DCCR; £95 (optional for delegate/s)
. Sentinel notifications; £3.22 each; there is the option of having 4 (which is mandatory) or 5, the breakdown for this is 1 for PTS, 1 for AC, 1 for DCCR, 1 for ICI and if you wish 1 for the LU section of ICI also (the LU element allows delegate/s to work on the London Underground)
. ICI Computer Test & Invidulation; £35
. VAT @ 20%
. = £657.46 (£657.456), if the LU section is required the price will be £661.32

Please note that whilst Bowen Projects can sponsor delegates if there is no work available for the delegate/s then Bowen Projects will inform you on the 6th week of sponsorship that you will be de-sponsored in 2 weeks time, on the 8th week Bowen Projects will remove their sponsorship. This then allows yourself to have 4 weeks remaining to find a new sponsor.

Please note the a Network Rail Standard D&A has a changeover of 12 weeks, throughout this time (when the test has been uploaded) the delegate/s are able to change their sponsor throughout those 12 weeks, however when the 12 weeks are over if the delegate/s wish to change their sponsor then they would have to sit a new D&A.

Well if you don't understand that and you're trying to become an agency worker then the other avenue is to apply directly to Rail companies. They do all that for their permanent employees.

I understand it .. It's just the sponsorship part that I don't, I have now found a place where I can do the PTS & TIC COURSE ... I'm just wondering if I will still struggle to get work once completed .. As I won't have any physical work hours under my belt so just trying to weigh my options as to whether it's worth it etc.. I have a friend who works for network rail who seems to think if I do the courses then he can get me work. It's just expensive and would like some opinions off people who have been on the same situation, and how it worked out for them? Cheers

You need a sponsor to get work. Remember that you will be a probationer until you've demonstrated competence and got signed off too. I'm not sure about NR offering work to externals??? Seems wrong but I may be talking rubbish!!!
Try BMSL (Bourne) as they in Salford. Ask for Steve Noone and see if they have any work and would put you through your PTS and other required learning. Be prepared to travel for work. It's almost impossible that you'll get work near home - you have to factor this in for costs etc. Please also research the pay aspect and the umbrella companies for pay with contractors. Umbrella companies can be a minefield. Maybe someone will see this and offer some advice. Good luck
