Help please think I have been sold a fake

Hi

I bought a works plate from a class 40 a week or so ago on eBay.

The works number on the plate is listed as 2774/D469 which became 40052. The plate was sold as ex 40052.

However on the RailUK website it states that the 40052 was D469 which had a works number was 2773.

Can anyone confirm what the works number was for D469 from another source?

Think I might of been sold a pup.

Fear not! according to C J Marsden's BR Diesel & Electric Loco Directory, the works number for D469 was 2774 (D252/40052)

It gets more confusing.

This is the one I bought on eBay.

This is from an auction catalogue from a few years ago. The plate looks in worse condition. However compare the numbers on the plate with the description.

Also do you think its the same plate?

Possibly, possibly not. Most E.E. locos carried two works plates, one below each driving cab window.

As Phil. points out, a plate was fitted on each side of the loco so obviously there is a chance that the plate that was sold at auction a couple of years previously was the other plate, it could just be a typo on RailUK's part, I've checked the directory again and it states that 2773/D468 is the works No. for D251/40051 with 2774/D469 for D252/40052, perhaps Railwayana Auctions sourced the info for their caption below the photo from the RailUK site?

Would be quite a job to fake somethimg like that. If you are going to make a fake, surely something rarer and thus more valuable would the thing to do.

The lettering on the two plates looks identical to me but that proves nothing either way. When the plates were first made it would have made sense to cast two at the same time so there would have been no difference between them unless there was some kind of flaw in the casting process. The one you have could be the same one as pictured and someone bought it, cleaned it up and sold it on. Or it could be from the other side of the loco. Or the owner of one of the plates might have made a casting from it, though I can't see that being a highly profitable line of business since with online auctions it would probably be pretty obvious if more than two of these were turning up on the market.
