Hi all

After being accepted for assessment for driver I decided to try some online tests to get practising. However when it came to the Fault Analysis Test I hit a problem. Im going to try and recreate the question here. Could people have a look at and answer and maybe tell me how you did it? I thought I understood this and had no problems when I did a signalling assessment with these in but the answers I am getting from this site aren't agreeing with me?!?

Each switch, when working correctly, will have an effect on a set of numbered lights which are shown in a rectangular box on the left hand side.
The rectangular box on the right hand side is the effect of that sequence.
In each of the questions provided, one of the switches is not working. It is your task to identify which switch is not working.

See attachment for question and tell me which switch you think doesn't work??

many thanks

francis

In the example, both Z and W are not working. Light C remains the same, so it either gets switched twice or not at all, the only switch in the example that switches light C on/off is W therefore W is not working. Lights B and D change so they get switched once or three times, switch X switches both once to their final position therefore switch Z is not working. Think the question must be worded wrongly if they say that only one switch doesn't work.

Its Z mate. But I would ignore these questions as they are nothing like what you get in the real tests. PM me for some practice tests. cheers

Funnily enough. I got one these booklets today in the post from Southern and it had exactly the same questions in (except letters were different). It took me a few minutes to get my head around it but then it seemed to be plain sailing from there.

The rest of the tests seemed easy (checking the answers against mine backed this up) but this particular had me a bit withered for 5-10mins.

I agree with oldagefanclub in that it appears to be both Z and W. What does your answer sheet say?

Well you see I copied and pasted it ad it says oy ONE switch is bust. And the answer to the above question is switch X is broken nice emailed them because out of the ten questions given 5 seem to have wrong answers!!

Their answer does not compute. Neither does my earlier one, I misunderstood the question! I now agree that logically it's Z and W. I therefore conclude ther eis an error in the test!

If I was you Francis I'd bin it!

I misunderstood the question!

Easily done when they dont bother to proof read their work:roll: This kind of thing really ****es me off. People buy these tests to practice and gain insights into what is effectivly a very important day in peoples careers and all it does with these errors is make things alot more confusing and frustrating.

ALready on it. Paid £10 for all the tests and in fairness all the other ones are really good. I've emailed and there looking into it as half the question in the test are the sane as above and dont have a logical answer!! I want some money back!!

In case you need yet another opinion, yes, BOTH Z and W are not working.
Switch X works and toggles B and D. The result of that transformation is the results shown - so clearly no further transformations are occurring.
(unless there were two switches, one which made a change and the other reversed it - but that's not what is described).

Another explanation with just ONE switch at fault, requires the phrase "not working" to mean "working, but not as intended", then any one of the 3 could be exhibiting a fault (changing outputs unexpectedly), and it would be impossible to deduce which switch had that fault.

If the answers are incorrect I would demand a refund,

Are there any tips or tricks for these sorts of tests or is it a case of practice practice practice?

yeh essentially practise them as much as you can. for this particular question i find that drawing 4 dots on a piece of paper and then covering them with fingers or scraps of paper works really well to follow the sequence through!

I can honestly say (having done these tests) that once you have worked out how to do one of the questions, the rest are pretty much the same.

The test I did for trainee driver was a dials test, and in my opinion are completely different to these. You get a much more complicated question, but at the same time you get much more info to complete your answer and they aren't really difficult at all.

This one was the test (out of all of them) that I revised the least, as there was no way of knowing what the type of questions were going to be exactly about until you turn over the paper.

Any more info about the tests I did please PM me.

Mrs Greenback has just looked at the test and come to the conclusion it's switch X. In a great example of female logic, she has explained that X switches the lights, then breaks, leaving the lights as they are in the final illustration. She bases this on the fact that if one light in the Christmas tree decorations goes, they all do.

I'll admit I find it diffcult to follow this reasoning, please let me know if she is right so I can hide for a week and avoid the inevitable gloating!

But she is basing that logic on information that is not evident or present within the question.

The question does not state how the circuit is set up so it is impossible to say with any certainty that if one light (or switch) fails, all the lights (or swtiches) fail.

I would be interested to hear on what the company has to say on this becuase if it is X that has failed, the question is not very well set up.

Hello all, had a nice email from the managing director of how2become and he says that there are indeed mistakes and that it is unacceptable. Needless to say that I am getting some freebies and access to more bits and bobs to help with the train driver application which is nice!

The reason I update is that if anyone else has ordered the same tests as me (online driver tests) give me a PM as he has said that if you can show you bought the tests as well you'll get the same freebies as me!
