Help please - For a total amateur

I wondered if anyone could help me.

I was recently given Railway Simulator powered by Trainz 12 by a friend

I have never played on one of these before and rarely play any computer games, I have installed this onto my computer.

I have followed the first tutorial which seems easy enough, with a small dial to control the speed of train.

However, upon playing the game properly I can't even get the train out the station. I have followed the instructions of press Q for break release and W to increase throttle. However, the maximum speed I achieved was 4mph and it ground to a halt. The route I was trying to do was the Hull Executive on the ECML from Hull to Kings Cross.

Can anybody on here help? What do I need to do to actually make the train move. Upon pressing W to increase throttle there was a huge increase in noise and a tiny bit of movement but then it grinds to a halt.

I am a total amateur so please be gentle. Any help will be much appreciated to get me going.

The box that I got given it in says 'Railway Simulator' then underneath powered by Trainz 12.

Edit: Yeah that is the one in the link. Is it an out of date one? Sorry I was a bit vague with my description, I really don't know what i'm talking about with computer games. I was hoping someone might be able to get me up and running.

I've followed the keyboard commands but I can't get the train to move very far.

I assume this is similar to trainz 2006...

So tutorial 1: Did you have a black circle with a white line thing. When you press W/A/S the train moves? Or you can just move it round with the mouse?

As harry says, it may be useful to work out whether you are in DCC or advanced driving mode - you'll know if it's the former is there is a dial in the bottom-right looking like a model railway controller.

Just to put this out there, assuming you are using advanced controls.
You say in your description that you released the brakes and opened the throttle, but you never mentioned the reverser, also the way you describe the train behaving sounds as if it is just rolling with no actual power.
Have you tried putting the reverser into forward, and then applying power.
The reverser works like the gear lever in a car, selecting forward or reverse gears.
I apologise if this sounds, patronising, that is not my intent, but it is easily forgotten sometimes.
