Help planning a journey from Paddington to Angel

Hi there.

I'm not a rail expert like any of you on here will be.

I just need some help haha!

I live in Plymouth so never have to use the underground, in fact it's extremely rare I go to London but tomorrow I need to for work.

I need to get from London Paddington Station to Canonbury Villas, London N1 2PN. (I think it's near the Angel tube station)

How do I go about this?

You could try using the journey planner at tfl.gov.uk . You can enter postcodes for start and end locations.

Take the Eastbound Hammersmith and City/Circle line to Kings X/St Pancras then take the Northern line Southbound to Angel

Are you doing this on a weekday?

If so, take the eastbound Circle/H&C to Moorgate instead, then take the Govia Great Northern service (may be marked British Rail or First Capital Connect) to Essex Road, which is quite a bit closer than Angel.

If it is a weekend, Essex Road will be closed. I would still recommend going to Moorgate, then picking up the Northern line northbound from there to Angel. King's Cross St Pancras is a bit of a maze with regards to the Northern Line at this time.

As for finding the eastbound Circle/H&C, do not go to the London end of the platforms, instead head up to the overbridge around the middle of the platforms, walk to the taxi rank, turn left and you'll see the Circle/H&C station ahead of you.

If you haven't bought your ticket yet, get a through ticket from Plymouth to Essex Rd which will include the Underground in between.

I think the Great Northern service at Moorgate is signed as 'Trains to Stevenage' or 'Trains to Welwyn Garden City'.

Paddington to Moorgate (eastbound Circle/Hammersmith & City) then National Rail (signed as National Rail services to Stevenage, but the actual train is Great Northern) to Essex Road. An alternative if that goes belly up is Bakerloo to Oxford Circus then Victoria to Highbury and Islington.

Avoid the interchange with the Northern Line at Kings Cross, due to escalator repairs access is only via the Northern Ticket Hall which is a very very long walk from the Circle/H&C/Met platforms.

You can get to the Northern Line from the tube ticket hall via the 'secret' passageway at the bottom of the Piccadilly Line escalators, despite signs saying you must use the northern ticket hall. Very useful for those in the know!

I randomly managed to find that the last time I was there! Followed the signs to the Piccadilly Line (as I was thinking of taking that) then found stairs down to the Northern Line where the circulating space between the Piccadilly platforms is. If you are stood on the Northern Line platforms then those stairs are shown as "Emergency Exit only" . Guess it is because of stairs and the risk of luggage being taken there, giving the potential for accidents.

There's a huge sign above the stairs saying "Northern Line." The signs in the ticket hall are because the three escalators leading from the Piccadilly line to the Northern line are currently sealed off undergoing refurbishment. The staircase alone couldn't cope with the crowds.

In the morning peak there are also staff at platform level to stop you going UP the stairs.

It's not secret as such (if you ask any of us for directions from the Tube dateline we'll send you down there) but, as Mojo notes, it couldn't cope with the crowds during the peak so its use is discouraged, particularly if you're not already in the system. Trust me, we'd quite like the Northern line escalators back as much as everyone else!

There were plenty of passengers going up the stairs at 0830 this morning!

I assume that before the northern ticket hall opened maintenance on the Northern Line escalators had to be done one at a time. I remember being directed along the passageway on my way down to the Northern in a few years ago but suspect there was one escalator working for passengers exiting the Northern Line.

Or Circle, Hammersmith and City to Kings Cross and walk to Angel from there as it is only a short walk away(10-15 minutes).
