I got a penalty, although I tried to comply with the guidelines (but unsuccessfully). The trainline app appeared to have cancelled my train on a Friday evening, although it was only delayed. I'm new to the trainline app and I am unfamiliar with how it works - I have never really used digital tickets before. I checked the guidelines for WMR, and I was eligible to get a train before noon the next day if there was a cancellation. I got on before noon on Saturday, and I got a penalty. I appealed but they said no. I do not have £108 and I am really stressed, as I am reaching the limit of my overdraft.

Thanks

Ok the surface it seems that you have no grounds for appeal and you just need to pay up and learn how to use the apps properly.
However, please post the paperwork (the original PF, your appeal and the outcome) all redacted to be anonymous and you will get better advice.
Appealing stops the clock and gives you time to save the money for the penalty.

Which train were you booked on? What date did this happen? Where were you travelling from and to? And do you have a record like a screenshot or link to the advice to travel the following day?

Please also upload the notice with your name and address removed so we can see if it was uploaded lawfully.

Irrespective of all the above I would always treat any notice that a train has been cancelled from any third party source with a great deal of caution unless I was on the platform at the time to see it not turn up - though the TOC's own service alterations web pages screenshot would proabaly stand.
