Help needed with test trains interview

I have a job interview this week with a...er...certain well known rail infrastructure company this week doing a job that involves planning their test trains, and one of the things they expect me to know something about is "train-borne data collection techniques". Whilst I'm aware of the various test and measurement trains such as the NMT, UTU, MENTOR, etc, I have to admit I'm a bit uncertain as to how the data the trains record is actually interpreted by the engineers on board.. Long shot, I know, but is there anyone on here who's worked on test trains who might be able to give me some insight into just what they do on board them?
