Help needed for OO9

Hi,

This is my first post on here so I'm not sure if anyone will see this, but I thought I'd put this question out here anyway.

I'm completely new to OO9 modelling - I'm more familiar with OO but still a relative beginner - and would like to start a mini-layout from scratch. I'm running on a VERY tight budget so I'd like to choose the cheapest possible options. I think the Peco Setrack ST-300 starter track set looks like a good place to start (I've chosen the N gauge version because it's cheaper and I don't really worry about sleeper spacing), but which controller would fit with the power connecting clips that come with the set? I have a stock standard Hornby analogue controller (the kind that comes with the starter sets for OO), would that be compatible?

If it's not, could anybody suggest an alternative controller to use please? As I've said, I'd like to choose the cheapest possible options.

I would have thought it would be fine, i use the mini gaugemaster one with my HO9 layout, same one i used when i was doing N.

I'd recommend you get proper 009 track though, it really does make a lot of difference. N gauge track is fine for back scenes (as i do).

There are model railway enthusiasts on this forum but they are in a minority. You would probably be better trying somewhere like RMweb ( .rmweb.co.uk ), which I think has modellers of all levels on it. There is also the 009 Society, but I am not sure if it has a forum.

That controller should be fine, as it is also suitable for N guage stuff which have similar/same motors as OO9 locos generally.

I became fascinated with narrow gauge for a short while nearly 40 odd years back. May have been something to do with a couple of the video's produced by Ivo Peter's (of S&D fame) at the time, vols 6 & 9 both having narrow gauge interest. At the time however, the modelling side of things was even more niche than it is now, and there just wasn't enough ready to run stock etc that floated my boat, so I remained with 00 gauge.

As mentioned above RMweb site is a good source for asking Q's, and also for prototype ideas (to model aspects of?) the 'Railway By-Lines' magazine (think that's the correct title) often has articles relating to narrow gauge, and is still published and available in WH Smith, or whatever the completely unmemorable new name is for some of the ex WHS branches!

Industrial Railway society (on line site) is also worth a visit for related publications that may be available.
