I am a total novice at this. My father passed away nearly 10 years ago and loved hos model railways so much that the loft was converted into his 'train den' my mother and I have recently been into the loft to have a clear out and found lots of what seem to be American HO scale trains. Can anyone help me as to where I would go for selling these? Thanks!

either a dealer or model shop that stocks 2nd hand american - or sell it on ebay
look in a model railway magazine at the adverts as often dealers advertise in them wanting to buy peoples collections or maybe in continental modeller magazine you will see shops that sell american trains and they may buy them

you might at least look at ebay (completed listings on auctions in uk) to get a rough idea what you might get.
Any layout may or may not have a decent retail value.
If you are able to identify any high value items then that might help your cause.
There are usually dealers in many areas who will buy second hand collections .... looking at the ads in a railway modellers guide may help ... but a careful internet search may find them. They would likely offer a lesser price than ebay ...
Checking out the exhibitor list at a local railway modelling exhibition may also yield a solution.
....These are suggestions off the top of my head.

In my experience, American models can sometimes be a little tricky to sell.
The "Model Power / Lifelike / AHM" brands usually tend to fetch little money on ebay when sold individually.
The Bachmann American models often do sell reasonably well.
A model shop that sells secondhand items might consider some of these items may be on the shelf for quite a while before a potential buyer turns up.
If you live near an auction, such as the twice yearly train sales that Andrew Hartley, in Ilkley, for example, it may be better to ask for an opinion with a view to splitting the locomotives and wagons into joblots.
There's various options, maybe a stall at a local toyfair - these usually cost around £30 for a day and the other traders and dealers may be willing to take the remaining items at close of play. Good luck and all the best anyways, whatever you decide to do. There's obviously sentimental value to them, which money can't buy !
