Help: Divisions to Areas

Can anyone* remember when Divisions (as in Divisional Civil Engineer) become Areas (as in Area Civil Engineer)? Current candidates are 1982 and 1984. Thanks!

I would say 1982. Peter Pescod was the last (and only) DCE Wimbledon. After he retired he became Consultant CE to the Watercress Line, and I remember him being present when we were laying track from Ropley towards Medstead. I have a record that the first track was laid on 16th May 1982, so he was out of harness by then. I started tamping in Feb 1983 and public trains started on 28th May.

AIUI, strictly speaking the Divisions were abolished, and the already extant Areas took over the extra responsibility. I also think 1982, as that was when the first stage of sectorisation occurred and the regions started to lose their power.
