In 1979 I travelled from Whitehaven to Coventry for an interview at what was then Lanchester Polytechnic.

In my mind I had changed at Nuneaton onto a train to Coventry. However I recently discovered that I couldn't have done this as at that time the Nuneaton to Coventry line was freight only.

My question then is where did I change from the Carlisle to Euston train in order to get to Coventry?

I am afraid I can't be precise about my date, it us even possible it was late 1978.

It is not an area that I know well, but could you have travelled on a train from Carlisle that stopped at Nuneaton and then either gone Nuneaton-Birmingham-Coventry or Nuneaton-Rugby-Coventry? These might be best if it was a Sunday with diversions or because, in the latter case, the train missed Rugby.

It was a weekday, my memory always thought Nuneaton then Coventry, pretty sure I would have remembered going through Birmingham.
Not that it matters of course what my journey was, I am just curious.

You might also have changed at Crewe, and caught a Liverpool - Birmingham - Poole service. It would be necessary to check the timetables to see if suitable connections existed.

Could it have been Stafford rather than Nuneaton where you changed?

There would have been trains from both Liverpool & Manchester Piccadilly heading towards the south coast in 1978/79, which ran via New Street, Coventry & Leamington Spa - mainly in order to serve the brand-new Birmingham International. I don't have the timetables (and good old Table 51) to confirm how many trains called at Stafford, or to spot any likely candidates.

Still, this doesn't solve that "don't recall passing through Birmingham" conundrum.

I have a lot of relevant direct experience here, and I lost a lot of hours from my life because there were no direct trains between Coventry and Nuneaton.

I did university interviews by train and remember parts of them quite vividly. In those days there was a hierarchy with Oxbridge going first, they were the main players for pre Christmas interviews. I did all of my interview trips in January and February so I think an interview at Lanchester is much more likely to be early in 1979 than late in 1978.

Can you remember what the weather was like, and whether you stayed overnight?

I lived in the West Midlands and was very familiar with the train service through Coventry in the late 1970s. In the 1978-79 timetable the basic off peak service at Coventry was hourly Wolverhampton and hourly Birmingham to/from Euston, the hourly local EMU via Northampton and er that's it. For a daytime interview at Lanchester in 1978/79 a train arrival at Coventry would have to be on one of those services.

There would have been trains from both Liverpool & Manchester Piccadilly heading towards the south coast in 1978/79, which ran via New Street, Coventry & Leamington Spa
No there would not. Most Liverpool/Manchester-South Coast trains ran via Solihull until May 1979, apart from a few early morning down trains and late afternoon up trains, which are not relevant for a day trip arriving at Coventry from the north.

In 1978/79 Whitehaven-Coventry would have been a bit of a challenge for out and back in one day. My suspicion is that you did get the train to/from Nuneaton, but then used road transport to get to/from Lanchester. Looking at the timetable, these are possible moves:

0550 Whitehaven-Carlisle arr 0702
0716 Carlisle-Euston change at Crewe arr 0937
0912 Manchester-Euston dep Crewe 0951 arr Nuneaton 1035
(this also called at Rugby but missed the hourly EMU to Coventry by 5 minutes)

1600 Euston-Blackpool dep Nuneaton 1716 change at Preston arr 1855
(this also called at Rugby but the hourly EMU from Coventry missed it by 10 minutes)
1645 Euston-Glasgow dep Preston 1916 arr Carlisle 2034
2110 Carlisle-Whitehaven arr 2221

Two taxis make a day trip feasible and would have saved the need for overnight accommodation. If there were enough interview candidates from the north west it might even have been worthwhile for Lanchester to provide a minibus.

Incidentally the furthest north I went was Lancaster, out and back with the same loco on 0900 Euston-Carlisle and 1552 Carlisle-Euston. It was a very long day, and my lasting memory of Lancaster is of it being very grey, cold and dark!

Thanks to all who have answered.
I think the most likely is that I changed at Rugby.
The journey to and from Coventry, from wherever I changed from the West Coast train, was not long.
Just shows how unreliable memory can be, I was sure it was Nuneaton, as to why I was so sure who knows?

Probably of no help in your particular case, but I know how frustrating this sort of thing can be. Spent a few weeks not so long ago trying to put together the journeys I and mates undertook in the 70's (mostly) and 80's. In our case these were spotting trips with the primary motive of bashing as many depots as possible within the time available. Our note taking however was, to say the least, basic, seldom any mention of train (time) travelled on, and often just pages of numbers, not even (in early days) separated by a location heading - absolute mare today, trying to work out our exact itinerary back in the day.

Thankfully, two net based sources, combined with loco numbers taken and a degree of educated guesses, have allowed me to relive some of the trips we made. The two sources concerned are Timetable world, which has scanned copies of those old timetables (GBTT's) many of us use to lug around, and I for one bitterly now regret binning after each one expired date wise, and also the web site - railgenarchive.co.uk - which although a far from complete source of loco workings (as the owner will no doubt agree with), has in a good few cases confirmed the location/train worked of certain locos that our merry group spotted here and there, so has allowed me to build a picture of our travels for a good many instances.

I appreciate for many such as yourself, your journey may have been such that the above detail would not help you now, but just thought to mention same in case anyone else looking in might welcome said info.

It really isn't far between Rugby and Coventry, so this does seem the most likely route. From memory, I don't think there were regular passenger services between Coventry and Leamington in the late 1970s, just occasional specials.

Was it that late? I lived in Coventry back then and my - obviously hazy - recollection is that the rerouting was linked to the opening of Birmingham International which was in 1976.

I also have a really clear memory of standing on platform 3 watching our train arrive off the Leamington branch (the ubiquitous 47555 unfortunately) to take us on holiday, and my little sister being in her pushchair and she was born in 1973. She wouldn’t have been in a pushchair aged 6. I really doubt it would have been an early morning train either, my parents weren’t that kind of people

Not that this matters a joy to the OP of course, and I suspect he likely changed at Rugby

My initial thought was the OP changed trains at Birmingham New Street, but that hole is quite memorable !

Whitehaven to Carlisle, WCML maybe changing at Wolverhampton rather than New Street ?

{I was actually attending the Lanch during the period in question, but travelled from home either changing at Bristol Temple Meads & Birmingham New Street or via Reading.

You are right that the rerouting was linked to the opening of Birmingham International in 1976, but it happened in 2 stages.

I don't think there were regular passenger services between Coventry and Leamington in the late 1970s, just occasional specials.

In May 1977 the morning northbound and afternoon southbound trains were rerouted, and this was when Leamington-Coventry reopened.

This was to facilitate day trips to the National Exhibition Centre from Reading and Oxford. But the last northbound train via Coventry was 1150 Paddington-Birmingham and the first southbound train via Coventry was 1438 Birmingham-Paddington. The morning southbound and afternoon northbound trains remained on the Solihull route. At that time the Paddington trains were still to/from Birmingham only, with no through workings to/from Manchester or Liverpool.

The second stage, when most morning southbound and afternoon northbound trains also switched to go via Coventry, was in May 1979. This is also when some Paddington trains started to work through to/from Manchester or Liverpool.

Did you end up at the Lanch? I got my miserable BSc in engineering there in 1978, and was back doing some consultancy for them in about 1990 or so. Much of the engineering was at the Hillmorton site when I was there - that's in Rugby... did you actually interview there I wonder?

I never made it to any university or poly. My interview was definitely in Coventry.
