Hi, i'm new here (although you already knew that. didn't you? ). I'm 20 years old and from Northern Ireland. I'm incredibly keen on all kinds of land travel and machinery, and my interest in trains has grown quite a bit recently.

I've been looking around for trainee train driver jobs, but can't find any. I'm not in a position right now to apply, but i would be interested, especially when i could apply. Am i looking in the wrong places?

Either, really. Although it could be a fair while before i can. I'm currently on sick leave from my current job (Goods in operative at Chain Reaction Cycles) and god knows when i'll be fit and well again.

Sorry but you wouldn't be able to apply until you were 21. You need to put some serious research into TOC's websites on their recruitment pages. Trainee driving jobs do appear, not for long usually and have way for applicants that jobs. Usually 500-1000 per vacancy. You need to stand out from the crowd.

I'm a musician, does that make me stand out from the crowd enough? Hey, at least making a PA announcement won't be a bother

No one stands out unless they have worked or spent a lot of time alone, have a mechanical background, has done adverse shift work, level headed and have exceptionally good concentration levels.

I'm happy in my own company, grew up around cars and machinery and fixing them, done 14 hour days before, i'm incredibly level headed and good concentration.

Not that i'm big headed or anything

You'll more than tick the boxes for "adverse shifts" and "mechanical background" then!

I didn't even have a mechanical background but have become very good on traction to say the least. Not being big headed or anything.

Don't forget anything can trip you up at Interview or application form stage. In the Interview for example, you can just get asked an odd, very unexpected question, from time to time.
