Hello I have just joined. I am a Booking Clerk / Travel Consultant / Ticket Monkey. I may occasionally want some advice re European travel privs (I am non-safeguarded) which is one of the main reasons Ive joined.

Meanwhile if I can be any help regarding UK pricing etc feel free to ask.

You can still apply for international passes as non safeguarded staff, you will get a 75 per cent in certain countries and 50 per cent in others. Considering how inexpensive rail travel seems in other countries this is probably a better deal for you than at home. You can apply through your local intranet.

Can I not also apply for boxes for individual countries?

Thank you and one of the most important questions I have is, (If I do get boxes) how long does it take between requesting them and actually getting them in hand? How far in advance should I put in for them?

You have to be on the job for a year before you can apply for your FIP card and any European coupons.

You get 1 or 2 coupons per calendar year on most of the European operators, with each coupon valid for up to 8 days (2 per "box") in 3 months from the date of issue, though they cease to be valid once you return to the UK.

As regards to applications for International Travel Facilities, Rail Staff Travel recommend applying 4 to 6 weeks in advance to be on the safe side, though FIP rules say that boxes should only be issued within 2 weeks of travel.

All the necessary forms for Staff Travel facilities can be found here and in most cases you can send them directly to Rail Staff Travel.
