Heaton Park Tramway Closure

We are very sorry to have to announce that until further notice Heaton Park Tramway is closed due to the theft of overhead wire.

No more information is available at the moment but will be posted when it is.

This is sad news. I hope the cretins who nabbed the overheads get nicked and brought to justice

that's very sad. That's a most interesting little system. Why won't the Government get off their arses and crack down on the cowboy scrap metal "industry"? Is it just that it's one of the few "industries" that's making any money, so the Government thinks that if they cracked down on it, the Economy would collapse?

A quick update

"Approximately 40-50 metres of overhead cable has been stolen from the two reserved sections of the tramway.
An overhead specialist has been called in and a cherry picker hired in order for the damage to be thoroughly checked.
The tramway is not expected to reopen anytime soon."

Very Sad indeed, what kind of a society do we live in where people think they have to steal from museums to make themselves happy.

Unfortunately, the thieves have no regard for anything but their own financial gain. People on this forum really understand how hard the society have worked to bring matters up to the stage of the line extension to the lake area.

JUst wanted to update fols a bit further not with any facts but more to the current attitudes of members.

The MTMS (Operators of Heaton Park Tramway) have been inundated with well wishes and offers of assistance and wish to thank all.

Therefore despite spending most of yesterday feeling very down and angry this has now turned into more of a feeling of whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger, so yes we will shut down temporarily to check and repair damage but long term this will not beat us! I'm sure Northernrail (Adam) my friend and colleague in the MTMS will join me in saying

"we are the MTMS and we keep going onwards and upwards BECAUSE WE CAN!"

Something on BBC News earlier about how it's going to made harder to sell scrap metal.

They previously had a voluntary registration scheme and the number of sellers dropped 40% or something overnight but the industry campaigned to get it overturned. The evidence is all you need to do is make sure theres a paper trail and it instantly puts of the the vast majority of chancers and opportunists leaving only the professional thieves and document forgers.

All overhead has now been replaced and now just awaits final testing on Sunday.

You will always get professional thieves but as you say chancers make up most of them.
