I went to all 5 terminals via Piccadilly line and my Freedom Pass worked OK.

Yes it is fine on the Piccadilly line but the OP travelled on the Heathrow Express, on which the Freedom Pass is not valid for free travel.

Have you been on the Mulberry bush?
That's a Piccadilly line train that serves all terminals, Hatton X -> T4 -> T123 -> T5
